Bittorrent

I am considering using Bittorrent to download a few comics. (I only recently discovered that that is possible.)

I would like to know the advantages and disadvantages to using Bittorrent. Does it put Spyware on your computer? Is it anything like Kazaa? (Which I've never used, but have heard that it's illegal.)

By the way, the snow is melting. It is now 40 degrees. :D

Bittorrent doesn't put spyware on your computer, and it's not exactly like Kazaa, because it's not a P2P (peer to peer) setup. They have what's called "seeders" and "leechers", and it uses your computer to upload the file you're downloading, while you're downloading it. The more seeders (i.e. uploaders who have a completed file) there are, the faster the leechers (those downloading and uploading) can DL the file. It's considered rude to only "leech" files, and seeding is really nothing more than keeping the Bittorrent window open after it finishes downloading. The general rule of thumb is to leave it open for as long as you took downloading the file.

Sometimes firewalls need to be disabled in order to use Bittorrent, but no one can hack into your computer via BT. If you don't feel comfortable taking down a firewall for long periods of time, then it's better to pass on using BT. If the files are small, then it's worth it. The only tricky aspect is that you have to DL the torrent file in order to DL the file itself. Double-clicking the torrent file, however, will start the DL process.

Hope that helps!

Bittorents rock and I don't know what I'd do without it. But the best place to download comics is DC ++. It's pretty much like Mirc and you can find *any* comic you want on it. If you want the comics channels just go on the channel list page and filter the word 'comic', you should be given enough channels to find what you're looking for.

I love downloading biotorrents. Just whatever you do, do not use Kazaa. The spyware that invades your computer is incredible.

Hey,

Would you mind giving the exact web address that you use to download comics?

[identity profile] vval.livejournal.com 2004-12-29 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Mostly from megaman.gotdns.com (Comics & Cartoons is the name)
There are others like Cimmeria.no-ip.org but you need at least 5gb on comics to enter that channel.

Where do you get comic bittorents from?

Well there are probably more but...
to me the main downside of bit torrent is the upload...
If you download anything from bit torrent, at the same time you have to allow others to upload that same file from your computer. Meaning that if you're under an upload limit(like me), you have to be real careful in how high that upload speed is.
(esp. if it's a lot higher than the download speed.)

Yeah I never find what I want there.

BTW, I found a new good channel: zkoobgpr.no-ip.org:4111

I download from here, (http://www.zcultfm.com/~comic/)once you register, it'll give you the option of Tracker 1, Tracker 2, Tracker 3, and Tracker 4, all of which have tons of comics. It's always a nice, fun place, full of comic people on the forums and the message boards, and once you get used to it pretty easy to download. Once you download the CDisplay, which is the program you use to read the comics, I think its one of the main ones, you can really find anything. I could even send you a bunch personally, I've been downloading for a year or so.

I'm gonna look that one up. Hopefully, I'll find a few things I've been looking for.
