Superman Returns, And A Poll
First of all, let me say this. I went in expecting it to be an annoying and corny version of Superman--I was very, very wrong, and I am grateful. Brandon Routh was wonderful as both Clark Kent and Superman.
I have never seen Kate Bosworth in a movie before this one, so I think she was great as Lois Lane. I'm happy they got her right this time. I might be one of the few that never could stand Margot Kidder.
And Lex Luthor? Simply amazing. Like Kate Bosworth, I had never seen a movie with Kevin Spacey in it, so I didn't know if he was good or not. I loved his take on Lex.
When little Jason turned out to be Superman's son, my first thought was that essay Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex. At least, until I remembered that in the second movie they briefly turned him human. I think that Jason knows Superman is his father--he probably overheard her tell Superman (while in a coma) about it. That's why he ran up to him and kissed his cheek.
Also, someone needs to tell Superman that the kid throws pianos when he's upset! He needs training to keep from smashing the bad guys.
Throughout the movie, I loved everything about Lex. I wasn't sure about Superman--at least, not until the scene where Lex had Superman beaten with the island of Kryptonite. After a while, I felt bad for the guy.
Loved the fact that, for a change, it was Lois that saved Superman. Of course, with all abuse Lois went through in this movie, I'm amazed she wasn't brain damaged or suffering from amnesia or internal bleeding by the end of it.
Oh! I almost forgot to mention this--James Marsden is Richard White? I didn't even recognize the guy until long after I had gone home, and was reading a review or ten. I can't recognize him without those visors he wears as Cyclops! He did a spectacular job, in my opinion.
Raise your hands if the Pomeranian thing briefly creeped you out. If you saw the movie, you should know what I mean.
And in the very end, when Lex and Kitty were trapped on that island, and looked at the puppy as food? Dad actually spoke up and said this: "Superman needs to wake up and save the puppy!"
There were probably a lot of references I didn't pick up. But the ones I know were homages--and that I actually caught--were:
-The bartender is the original Jimmy Olsen from the 50's
-The old lady swindled out of a fortune by Lex is the original Lois Lane from the 50's series.
-Perry White says "Great Caesar's Ghost!" when the giant globe is about to fall on him.
-I have read in another review that there is a mention of Gotham City--missed it.
-I have read in another review that someone says there is a reference to Smallville in Luthor's train set.
-A newspaper has a picture of Superman holding up a car--reference to Action Comics #1.
-The back-up newspaper made by Perry that says "Superman Dies" is a reference to The Death Of Superman.
-The "It's a bird, it's a plane, it's..." thing was from the 50's series.
-Lois trying to quit smoking was a reference to the original Superman movies.
-Jimmy Olsen crossdressing--wait, what? That's not in the movie, you say? Should have been. (He did that in a few comics. Sorry, heh.)
I can't think of any others at the moment.
That scene of Superman trying to be saved by Doctors when he goes into a coma, might have been a reference to Superman dying in the 90's storyline of The Death Of Superman. I know Perry's newspaper definitely was.
ETA: Okay, the original Lois played the old lady at the beginning of the movie. That has been fixed now.
Turns out you have to have created your journal before you apply at that RPG I mentioned in the last post. (Zooey Deschanel is now the PB.) So I'm trying to come up with a username for Cannonball, and am currently drawing a blank--other than flying_disaster, that is.
Beneath this second cut, you will find a poll. Simply write in your ideas for a username.
ETA: Please keep in mind this is a genderswap X-Men RPG, where Cannonball is female.
[Poll #760222]
And lastly, I just posted my first rec for

ETA: Just so everyone knows, the poll runs until tomorrow afternoon.
