A Tree Almost Went Through The Roof

Last night, we had a thunderstorm/ice storm. Because of all the sleet we’ve been getting, the power lines have also become frozen over. Due to that, pretty much half of the city seems to have lost power because some of the lines have broken. Here, all the power lines are still frozen, and during the night last night, the power flickered at least four times.

It’s flickering every so often today, and if the power does go out, it will be a while to get things fixed, because so many people have the same problem. If that does happen, and it’s messed up the day my fanfic for [profile] smith_n_jones is due--this Friday, I believe--then just know that I will get the fanfic posted, it’s just weather issues.

Related to this, we also had Snow Thunder last night. At the height of that, around 2 AM, there was a sudden “KA-BOOM” (Dad didn’t hear it!) and the entire house shook. Turns out the tree in the back yard had the top half break off and land on the roof. We didn’t know that until this morning, when we could finally see outside. Also, the garage had water leak under the doors, due to the amount of rain/sleet, so the poor cat was upset when we let her in.

Despite all the horrible weather I got to the dentist--when Mom and I got back, Dad said that more had fallen from the tree, and hit the roof. While it was still sleeting, Dad actually dared to walk around outside, and take pictures of how bad it is. [personal profile] seandc said he wanted to see what it looked like yesterday before it got so bad, so I’m posting it beneath the cut.

Oh, and all up and down the road trees are sagging and branches have broken off and fallen in the street. According to the local news, one couple in Livingston County actually had a tree fall through their bedroom roof, so I guess we’re lucky. Supposedly, the tree hit the husband on the head, but he's fine and walking around.

This first angle is from a neighbor’s driveway, showing our house from the back yard. You can see the frozen power lines, and part of the downed limb.

1

Here is a better view, right at the tree limb. The window at the middle (I think) is where it almost went in. If you look from inside, it’s scraping the glass.

2

More, showing where it’s sagging and will likely fall a bit more.

3

And here, Dad managed to get closer. You can also see the fact that the tree had grown flower buds right before the storms. That’s because of the weather going up and down so much that it thought it was spring.

4

This is how a neighbor’s house looks under everything now. She lives across the street. You probably can’t see it, but there’s a branch down across her truck.

5

And here is a view of the front yard, showing frozen trees and a flooded ditch. And my cat watching from the front door. Oh, and the rose bush fell over from the weight of the ice.

Some places are getting flooding, and according to reporters on the local news quite a few trees are just toppling over, many of them taking power lines with them. 30,000 people are without power--I think that’s here in Paducah, but they read the list too fast.
