Pictures Of What Happened
Yesterday, the internet was down, but it was apparently a problem on our end, and not Comcast in general after everything.
Now that it’s back, I went ahead and read through my friends list. I went as far as skip=990 before I hit the friends list limit, and that was just as far back as the 30th. For any Doctor Who fanfic updates I might have missed from Tuesday through Saturday, I’ll read through![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)

Dad went to various places yesterday, and stocked up on food and supplies. He went to Super Valu, and they were busy scanning inventory, as they threw it away. They wanted to know how much they were out. When he left they were only halfway finished, and had already lost $100,000 worth of inventory.
He also says that he went through and saved a few articles on the storm from The Paducah Sun in a pdf file, just in case anyone on my friends list wanted to be able to read about it, without having to be subscribed.
First, this is what things looked like on the morning (the digital camera does file names with dates, which helps me with the timeline) of January 28, 2009. The debris nearest to the camera is our front tree. You can make out the edges of the tree against the wall of the house—that would be at my bedroom. That’s why I ran when I heard it hit. You can’t really see that there were still quite a few bits up on the roof in this one, though.
A better view of the tree that had been there for, literally, centuries, before splitting. This is not the one that hit my room. Mom says that this area used to be a forest a long time ago, and that a few of the trees were just never cut down when houses were built around the area, and it became a neighborhood. Thanks to Rhonda offering to let Dad move his van and the white car to her driveway mere hours before, we didn’t lose the cars to that. Another angle of the same tree. Please keep in mind that that is layers of ice, covered by snow, covered by more ice.
Across the street, here’s Nellie’s house. You can see all the trees falling over.
Back to our house, another angle of the tree as of January 30th, after a little more fell down.
And now, a shot of the tree that almost went through my room, had it been slightly over a bit. That tree used to be entirely solid, so you can see that it’s split. There’s a branch against the window, and apparently some of that against there saved the rest of the tree from coming down into my room. Look somewhere toward the left, behind everything, and you can see the power lines are frozen solid. The bush it totaled might grow back someday.
A closer view of that, and we’re not sure why the tree is still standing. It’s going to be chopped down as soon as we can get someone over to do that. In the meantime, Dad’s been using his chainsaw, and has managed to get rid of most of what was hanging down here.

And, last but not least, the tree in the back yard. It used to be huge, and now it’s pretty much collapsed. Look carefully, and you can see some of the limb peeking over across the other side. There’s also a limb hanging over the garage, and power lines. As of today, it’s not over the power lines anymore, and has shifted so it isn’t really over the house. We’re still going to get someone in to chop it down when they can. There isn’t a picture of the smaller pine tree—the top half of it fell off entirely, but Dad thinks it’s still alive.
Dad took over 80 pictures (and he’s still going) but I think these are probably the most that I need to post at the moment. During the night when it all started, you could regularly hear crashing and banging as trees fell all up and down the street, as well as a couple away from here. We just finished printing out the worst of the stuff for Nellie, so she can see what it did to her house while she's trapped in another city.
