Sherlock Holmes

Recently, I managed to track down a Sherlock Holmes movie called Sherlock: Case of Evil. I had heard that it could be one of the worst adaptations ever. Having just finished watching it, I almost agree. Holmes is miscast--and he’s now a guy who sleeps around, brags to everyone about what he does, and goes off and gets drunk during cases. Moriarty is seriously miscast, too.

So even if anyone hasn’t seen it, what would you consider to be the worst and the best movie versions of Holmes?

I’ll probably cross-post this to one of the Sherlock Holmes groups in a few minutes, too.

The best Sherlock Holmes film I know is The Great Mouse Detective, especially the first sixty seconds Basil is onscreen. I've also seen Murder by Decree, The Seven Percent Solution, Larry Hagman in The World's Greatest Detective, the Rathbone Hound of the Baskervilles, and ... That might be it. Hound of the Baskervilles I recall least well, except that the end changes with an added chase scene and crypt trap, so I guess by default that's the worst one I've seen.

Gleep. I vaguely remember "Basil" but it didn't do anything for me. Most of the Rathbones and other Holmes movies passed me by - "Young Sherlock Holmes" passed into the "so bad it's good category" so I consider it worst-and-best.

Apparently Peter Cushing made a Hound movie as well... ever heard of it? (I haven't, but a sort of Holmesiana-for-dummies book I own thinks highly of it.)

The only bit of Young Sherlock Holmes I've seen is the end title. I forget the circumstance under which this came to be so. But I can't really say "I've seen it" so I can't rank it.

I'm sure I've heard of it, or read of it, in passing but I've not seen it.

Who was Watson?

Best? Without a Clue. I know it's a parody, but it's a damned funny one and surprisingly in character, considering.

Tom Baker did one too, which played here on PBS as I recall. It wasn't that impressive.

I loved The Seven Percent Solution. Love your top choice, though. I've got it on VHS somewhere....
