Certain styles will allow you to upload a background. I know that Boxer does, because it's the one I use. You have to have the image you want to use hosted somewhere that allows for remote linking, then you just have to copy and paste the URL in when you are customizing your layout.
Ok, you need to get into where you edit your customizations. You will need to make sure that the layout style you choose has a background image feature. For instance in the Boxer layout, when you click "edit customizations" there will be 4 tabs at the top of the page that you can select from, and one will be "background", click that tab, and there will be a feature called "background image" that has a space to paste in the URL of your image.
I'm fairly certain that you'll have to switch to the S2 style, Punquin. Then see if you have a button show up that says "edit customizations" on your "customize" page.
Once you change to S2, and the "edit customizations" button shows up, click it and see if there is a tab at the top of the page that says background. I've only used Component, and Boxer - both of which allow you to put in your own background image.
