Three Fandoms Meme

Tell me you want to play and I'll pick up to three of your fandoms. Then update your journal and answer the following questions:

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?
2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?
3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?
4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?
5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Persiflage_1 gave me Buffy, Doctor Who, and Back to the Future.

Buffy

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?

This is a bit of a long way to liking a fandom. I tried to watch the first episode, and either thought it was dull, or just didn't care for anything of it. Moved on. Stumbled across half of season 1 in a VHS box set, and having forgotten I didn’t like the first episode, bought it. Watched The Pack, decided I didn’t like it, forgot about it. Moved on to Highlander: The Series, just in time for their final season. (Finally found that set again a few weeks ago, threw it in the trash) Season 3 rolls around, and Dead Man’s Party airs. I decided to give it one last shot. I liked it, was hooked. Giles being sarcastic was part of what did it. “Oh, isn’t it pretty? It raises the dead! Bah! Americans!” That, and I liked Willow.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

I think it’s safe to say that I’ve mostly moved on. On the rare occasion I spot it on Logo, if it's a good episode, I do watch.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

I don’t think I have any of the novels anymore, outside of one (somewhere) where Willow got possessed by a Chinese demon. I don’t know the name of it. For favorite episodes: The Gift. Once More, With Feeling, in spite of the fact I usually don’t like music. Becoming, Part 2. Graduation Day, Part 2.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

I used to. These days, it’s mostly only by looking through links. I still have several icons from those days.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Only if they wanted to. I wouldn’t advise them using season 1 as a starting point, as it isn’t the strongest season.

Doctor Who

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?

I stumbled across an airing of The Unquiet Dead, back when The Sci-Fi Channel aired episodes a year after they aired in the UK. Someone (I don’t remember who) told me not to get attached to Eccleston, since he was going to be killed off soon. So I didn’t, and still loved the show.

It turns out that when I was 13 or 14, I stumbled across the series without realizing it. 1-800-Trekker (a magazine) was selling Star Trek, Dark Shadows, and other assorted stuff. In the random bits section, they were selling a few novels that crossed over with Sherlock Holmes. I bought An All-Consuming Fire, by Andy Lane, and skipped all the parts that didn’t have Sherlock Holmes in them. So, technically, the Seventh Doctor was my first Doctor. Even if I avoided everything with his part, and stuck with Holmes and Watson.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

I might stick around even if I fall out of love with it, just to see what happens with the show.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

Blink. The Family of Blood. Utopia. The Sound of Drums. The Fires of Pompeii. Midnight. Journey’s End. The Pandorica Opens. The Impossible Astronaut/The Day of the Moon. The Doctor’s Wife. Several others I’ve likely forgotten right now.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

I don’t write fanfic for it these days, although I used to. It’s almost too convoluted, with all the rebooting of the universe.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Only if they’re ready for a very complex canon.

Back to the Future

1. What got you into this fandom in the first place?

I never saw any commercials for the movies, not even when they would have been released to VHS. I never saw them in the theater. I never even heard about the Back to the Future trilogy until I was 11 or 12. (Same as with Indiana Jones, which I wouldn’t see or even hear of until the last day of school in 7th grade—when they showed the trilogy all day long, and I immediately went to rent them) I stumbled across them in the comedy section. I vaguely wondered to Dad if they were worth watching. A passerby overheard and screamed, “YES! GOD, YES! YES!” before leaving.

Rather than the normal traumatizing me and scaring me away from it entirely, Dad and I shrugged and gave it a shot. So thank you, random crazy person. Whoever you may be.

2. Do you think you'll stay in this fandom or eventually move on?

Likely stay.

3. Favorite episodes/books/movies, etc?

I prefer the third movie. Which is odd, seeing as I usually hate Westerns.

4. Do you participate in this fandom (fanfiction, graphics, discussions)?

Outside of collecting links, and writing fanfic for Yuletide, (or the occasional meme) not that much.

5. Do you think more people should get into this fandom?

Only if they want to.
