The Madness of Computers

For the past 3 and a half hours, my computer has been acting insane. It said that it would try to recover files that hadn't been lost. Then, it said it was deleting every single file I had. It was apparently a 3 stage process, that just finished 5 minutes ago. It said it was done, and opened up Windows. To my delight, it didn't remove or delete anything from my computer. I've checked, and there wasn't a virus.

Does anyone know what would cause a computer to act like that?
