The End of Time Part 2 Review
My reaction to The End of Time Part 2, in no particular order:
-Raise your hand if you (albeit briefly) hoped for a group dance scene from Masters the world over, which would put The Last of the Time Lords to shame.
-They really should have fixed Donna. Being given a lottery ticket doesn’t make up for a mindwipe, with a significant chance of your head exploding the next time aliens invade.
-The Martha marries Mickey rumor turned out to be true. While I don’t care for it, at least her husband isn’t nonexistent. And if the Doctor stands there being weird, I think Martha would have gone to him, and not just stared. Then again, maybe I’ve read too much (never the case, of course) fanfic.
-Alonso/Jack is sort of cute, and so is the Doctor matchmaking. However, I had been expecting Jack to finally kiss this incarnation of the Doctor, and was disappointed that he didn’t. And I had to wonder what in the world the Adipose would drink in a bar like that.
-The Master might be dead again, but I’m fine with that since he never stays dead. Unless he used up all his life force blasting the Time Lords. Then again, he’s probably got other contingency plans. John Simm was great in this episode, too. Oh, and I firmly believe that it was just a matter of time before the millions of John Simms ate each other because of the hunger.
-During the Gallifrey scene--I wondered just how many Time Lords ended up regenerating after falling off that walkway that didn’t have a rail. It’s a hazard. I was just waiting for someone to plummet to their death.
-Wilf’s question about people being changed into the Master in their graves was a very good one. I had wondered that, too. Hopefully, they're back to normal--or an archaeologist will soon find ancient Neanderthals all looked like the Master.
-Oh, and that little gun thingy Wilf was firing from on the ship—I barely know anything about Star Wars, and tend to miss all references, but even I got that one. That, and the bar scene with Jack. (Which had me wondering what an Adipose gets drunk on.)
-The Doctor protecting the Master by telling him to step out of the way, and vice versa. Loved that, and the whole thing of the Master going after the Time Lords for what they did to him. That, and the whole thing where the Doctor just didn’t know who to point the gun at were well done. I kept expecting him to shoot himself. And, I’ll admit that I expected a reverse Last of the Time Lords scene, with the Master holding the Doctor while he regenerates.
-The lady in white--my opinion is that it’s either Romana or Susan, with me leaning towards the latter. I’ve also heard the great theory that she could have been the White Guardian, which is interesting but unlikely. I've heard the theory that it was his mother, and am choosing to ignore it.
-Was Timothy Dalton supposed to be Rassilon or just named after him? I didn’t really understand that moment. And did I catch a Weeping Angels reference? It went by too quickly to be sure on that.
-I loved the Ood singing to the Doctor and saying his song might end, but never his story. Him saying “I don’t want to go” was heartbreaking.
-The Doctor blew up the TARDIS with the strength of his regeneration. Well, that would be how the TARDIS wallpaper gets changed next season, then. I had thought that Wilf should be there and he shouldn’t be alone at the end--but if the force of the regeneration was that powerful, then he would have slaughtered anyone with him. And it would have taken a while for even Jack to revive from that one. I’ll assume the force was because of the sheer amount of radiation he absorbed, combined with reluctance to leave.
-The Eleventh Doctor was kind of cute, with the way he briefly thought he’d turned into a girl, and checked to be sure he had legs, and every other body part. And still wasn’t ginger.
I think this is really the first regeneration I’ve seen at the same time as everyone else. When I first started season 1 with the Ninth Doctor on the Sci-Fi Channel, I had been told before starting to watch that he was going to die at the end of the season, and not to get attached. While the Ninth Doctor was my first Doctor, the Tenth Doctor was the first one I loved.
All in all, I liked it. It had a few bad moments like the goodbyes dragging on, but I liked it.
And for those interested, here’s the first trailer for season 5. You can watch Tennant’s on-set farewell speech here. Tennant discusses the Tenth Doctor’s final line here, and there are a couple outtakes.
