Where Did The Dogs Come From?

This morning, Mom went to buy a Sunday paper for the coupons. She got home, had the garage doors open--and before it could be closed, two dogs we’ve never seen before came running in. They were two Labrador Retrievers, at least 150 lbs or more each, very, very big. Cue Mom shrieking for Dad’s help, since she doesn’t like large dogs, and wanted some back-up just in case.

Understandable, after the last gigantic stray that we dubbed Cujo—who wanted me dead going by the look in his eyes and everything he tried...and then came back for a sequel. Yes, that one escaped from the pound months after we thought it was over, came back before we could be properly warned, and cornered me in the backyard. I got inside fast as I could, and he just...waited for me to come back, with a scary look. He’s been put down since then, so unless he comes back from the grave we’re good. If that happens, Mom says we’re moving because at that point we’ll have hit Stephen King territory.

And now, returning to the recent dog thing. Cue Dad (and me) hearing Mom’s shriek, assuming Toby had escaped and wanted to play, and ignoring her. At least they weren’t vicious? So from 6:45 AM, until around 8:30 AM, we were trying to round them up, and keep them from getting inside—one could open the door with a nose! Yes, they tried! Oh, and keeping them from messing with Toby. Toby went nuts, and they just stood there wanting to play.

Toby seemed to get that he was outnumbered and outclassed, and didn’t try to escape. He just howled and snarled and did everything else, because he didn’t want them to hurt us.

They did everything synchronized, and seemed to be sweet. They weren’t starving to death, so they escaped from somewhere. They’ve apparently been inside houses before, because they kept trying to get in ours. They never barked once. They obeyed everything I told them, but nobody else, so I’m not sure how good they are with orders. They tried to get in Dad’s car, so they’ve apparently been in cars before. We called the dog catcher because we didn’t want them to get hit by a car--by the time she arrived (four hours later) they were long gone. We haven’t seen them since.

So it's been an interesting day so far.
