How The Storms Fared
For those that might be curious, here’s what happened yesterday:
-Everything started here around 7:15 PM, and it ended at 8:15 PM. Tornadoes, thunder, lightning, hail, high winds. The hail was nickel sized, others got larger sizes. Power flickered for the entire time, partly due to some power lines being snapped in some places, while others had the poles uprooted. Going by the random boom, someone’s transformer exploded, too. I didn’t see any tornadoes in Lone Oak, just a huge wall cloud that had the potential of being more.
-Where I am, the wind was 80-90 mph. At the mall, it was 100 mph. Lowe’s was seriously damaged, but I haven’t heard the extent of it yet. I do know that they have little aluminum sheds out front for purchase, and for one day were allowing a homeless man the use of it, as he passed through town. All the sheds around him went up into the air and blew away, but his didn’t. After it was all over, he said he was never staying in this town again, and was heading north where it was, hopefully, safer.
-The tornado sirens started because at least one tornado was spotted at Noble Park, in addition to the utterly massive wall cloud that we had. Near Noble Park is Dairy Queen. Something crumpled the drive thru, but nobody was hurt.
-Parkview Nursing Home--which is relatively close, being in the Lone Oak area--had a tree smash through the back part of the building. Residents thought they smelled smoke at first, but there wasn’t a fire.
-In Gallatin County, the roof was torn off the elementary school in 10 rooms...and then it caught on fire. They eventually got the fire out, but school’s out for them for the rest of the year. Their end of the school year was in 2 days anyway.
-A barn was dropped on the interstate, and nobody knows who it belongs to.
-Once everything finished, there were normal thunderstorms for the rest of the night. From what I can tell as of this morning, I don't think this house had any damage.
-Now, for one of the stranger things to come out of this. After the storm, once everything was calm, a couple ventured outside to check for any property damage...and found their cat sitting there, who had been missing for over a year, and presumed dead all that time. He was fine. He still had his collar, all the markings that showed it to be him. Nobody knows if he was just rambling around until the outside world got too rough for him or not. He just wanted inside.
ETA: Some more information, courtesy of the local news at noon. At the Lourdes Pavilion, a street light was torn out of the ground. Which means ripping it from both the pavement, as well as where it's situated in a block of concrete. The latter was shattered.
