Computer Problems

Starting yesterday, my computer has been having problems. AIM and ICQ will not work at all--it seems to be just my computer with this problem, though.

Plus, when I tried to restart the computer a message briefly appeared that said "304 Keyboard Error". I haven't been able to read the rest, since it disappeared too quickly.

I have done a virus scan, but nothing has shown up.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

(I didn't realize how much I used AIM and ICQ, until I couldn't get either to work, anymore.)

I don't know what could be wrong, but you might try downloading Miranda IM. It allows you to use Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and probably others all at the same time from one program, and it's nearly bug free. It's my drug of choice. If you just google it you can find the link.

Good luck!

Well, let's run through the list of helpful easy computer solutions:
1. Delete temporary internet files and/or cookies (though the cookies can be a little problematic)
2. Defrag the computer
3. Programs like Ad-aware and Spybot are free and will clean spyware off your computer and help keep it running smoothly
4. If you have XP or ME, it has a roll-back feature that will let you set the computer back to a previous date when it was working. This option means you lose anything you've added since that last restore point, and you have to have some restore points.
5. Scandisk, which becomes harder to locate the more advanced Windows become, but it is there somewhere.
6. Uninstall and reinstall ICQ and AIM. I know that AIM has a new version out. Also sometimes programs become corrupt.
7. Reinstall Windows. This is the most drastic step, but our techs actually suggest that Windows be reinstalled once a year for optimum computer performance.

Hope that helps.

According to Compaq's site:

304-Keyboard or System Unit Error

Probable Cause/Recommended Action
Keyboard or system board error
1. Replace the keyboard.
2. Replace the TouchPad or mouse.
3. Replace the system board.

Have you tried just unplugging the keyboard and replugging it back in with the unit turned off?
