Let The Rants Begin...
Each rant will be placed under an LJ cut, so those who don't want to read them don't have to. :)
seandc How about a rant on the difficulties of not having access to a comic shop? :D (with or without the other bit we discussed last night ;))
Ah, yes. Comic shops. Normally, in most cities you would think that there would be quite a few comic shops. Not around here. Here, the only one around is disgusting. In another LJ post, I described just how bad it was. I'll post it again, for those who didn't read it. The one comic store in town is dank, dirty, dark, and dingy. There is no organization. There is no light, almost, and there is constant heavy metal music playing on a radio. Plus, all the smoke from smokers make it a very unpleasant place to be.
Many years ago, there was a great comic shop at a local mall. One day they were there, the next they were gone. Literally. It was 10 times better than the other place.
Now, the only way to find comics is if I happen to run across a few old ones at a local used bookstore, or by ordering through Mile High Comics. It would be much easier if there were at least one good comic shop within 100 miles.
Unfortunately, it seems that nobody is interested in selling comics in this city. And, sadly, this doesn't seem like it will change anytime soon.
grimprime OK then, rant about death and the ease of resurrection in comics.
Resurrection in comics. Yes, this tends to be overdone quite a bit. I doubt that I could list all the characters who have done this. The team that resurrects people the most, though, is the X-Men. The one person who tends to be resurrected continuously, while other wonderful characters (on other teams, and in other books, not just the X-Men) languish in death or Limbo (not Illyana's Limbo) is Jean Grey.
Jean Grey has died so many times that even the characters in the comics joke about it. The Dark Phoenix Saga is thought by many to be an incredible storyline. I agree, it is. But the constant resurrection of Jean lessens the impact of the Phoenix Force/Jean's sacrifice, and of this story.
Quite possibly the only character who has not been resurrected is Bucky, Captain America's sidekick from the 1940's. There are others (like Jason Todd), but there is always the possibility that a bad writer will fall back on the cliche, and resurrect. This would lessen the impact of Jason's death, for one. He seems to have become more of a symbol of what can happen in the line of duty to Bruce than anyone else.
Resurrections also tend to lessen the impact of the characters death scene. And what their death meant. It is also very rare when the resurrection is done well, and everyone is happy. An example of a good resurrection, is probably Blink. Even though it isn't the Blink from the normal X-Men universe who is dead, but one from Age of Apocalypse, and who appears in Exiles.
(As I'm ranting, I'm watching season 5's episode of Buffy called "The Gift." Funny coincidence, and just thought I'd mention it. For those who doesn't understand, it's a great sacrifice for Buffy, but it is lessened by her resurrection.)

I agree. The whole resurrection of Superman was so convoluted. The whole thing with 4 people who might be him, but really weren't was insane.
I forgot to mention Colossus being resurrected recently, too. I'm not sure how I feel about that one yet, though.
