Rest In Peace, Fred Ward

Fred Ward has passed away at the age of 79. At this time, no cause of death was given. May he rest in peace.

Not being a fan of the Tremors franchise, I didn’t think I was truly acquainted with his work. And then, I scrolled through his filmography. To my amusement, he played Sgt. Hoke Moseley in Miami Blues (1990), which I had just finished watching on Tubi last night. His performance was genuinely fantastic in a movie that was not the best. He was almost the only reason I stuck with it to the end.

Looking beyond that, I need to track down Cast A Deadly Spell (1991). Would anyone recommend Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)? I’ve heard of the title in passing before, but never knew if it was worth watching.

Remo Williams is extremely cheesy, but a lot of fun. There are a few elements that haven't aged well (Joel Grey playing a Korean). One of my favorite movies, and I've read 40 or 50 of the pulp Macho Adventure books it was based on.

I was ten when the Remo Williams movie came out and thus probably eleven when my pal and I rented the VHS from the corner store and we loved it. I've seen bits and pieces of it in the decades since and yeah, some of it would not fly now but on the whole it's a pretty good take on a pulp series that should have gotten a lot more attention and traction than it did at the time. The novels are a totally different kind of bonkers and you should try at least one for the sake of it.

I have a DVD copy of Cast A Deadly Spell that I bought on eBay but was afraid to ever watch (I would not be surprised to find out the whole thing is covered in Spanish subtitles). I can either send it to you as-is or make an attempt to check it out and then send it to you.
