“Think but this, and all is mended: that you have but slumbered here, while these visions did appear; and this weak and idle theme, no more yielding but a dream.”
--- A Midsummer Nights Dream.

Zoe’s dreams had been filled with horrors for the past week. While this was nothing new--after all, she had survived many a battle with nothing but her wits and her captain--these were different.

They were…almost real. There was more of a reality to them than most of her dreams had ever held. It was slightly unsettling.

She felt that if she was a lesser person, (or a crazier one, as her thoughts briefly turned to River) the dreams would have caused her even more sleepless nights. She would have cowered under the covers, and cried herself back to sleep.

Instead, she found herself cleaning her rifle each night. Not avoiding sleep—oh, no never that. Merely making sure the weapons were ready for the next heist. And the one after that.

If I think about the horrors, they’ll stop. I’ll be able to sleep, and there won’t be any more concerned looks from Wash during the night... Run-tse duh Fwo-tzoo!

It was mostly about Reavers chasing everybody. That was the easiest part for her to remember. Snarling, growling, howling and groaning. Reaching and eager to take her apart...to tear Wash apart.

And then, they would start on the rest of the crew one by one. If they had weapons, it would make things even worse. A shot in the back, or a knife in the gut. You never could tell when someone was crazy.

With a snort, she thought, I’ll be the crazy one if I don’t get sleep soon...

The Reavers ain’t that intelligent. They wouldn’t plan to board us while we nap...they wouldn’t be silent as mice in a church. They would skin us alive, and sew our skin into shawls! Of course, I never did think that I’d meet a Reaver up close, and look at that--it happened.

She had been so intent on cleaning her gun, and dwelling on her nightmares, that she almost didn’t hear the footsteps of her husband come up from behind her. If she hadn’t heard him, there would have been a mess to clean up come morning...

So she didn’t start in surprise as Wash wrapped his arms around her waist. She wasn’t much for cuddling, but if it was Wash? She could make an exception.

"Hey, Wife. Bad dreams?"

Smirking, she replied, "Hey, husband. Not the worst I’ve ever had."

She would never tell him the really bad parts. While he might be the best man she had ever known, she didn’t think he could take hearing the carnage the Reavers caused throughout her dreams. It would cause him his own nightmares to boot, and she didn’t want to put up with him kicking her in the middle of the night.

She was distracted from thoughts of...well, anything really, when Wash took to kissing her neck. And then down her neck... “Go Hwong-Tong!

“Wash? Care to move this to the bedroom--before we get some company?”

His tiny, but very, very wicked grin told her everything. Mostly that he would toss her over his shoulder if he could. She could do the same, but she didn’t want him to think he was too weak. Tossing a grin over her shoulder, she gestured for him to follow her.

Then, she quickly ran to their bedroom, Wash mere steps behind.

Part of the nightmare still haunted her. One phrase, actually. “I’m a leaf on the wind...”

She didn’t know what it meant, and...oh!...she was very, very distracted from it now. Courtesy of her beloved husband.

You know what? Just forget that stupid dream, Zoe! There’s more interesting things in the ‘verse than a dream! We shouldn’t care about anything else for the next...few...hours!

Chinese Translations:
- Go Hwong-Tong= Enough of this nonsense.
- Run-tse duh Fwo-tzoo= Merciful Buddha

Oh, shivers, goosebumps. This is a beautiful piece of writing. I love the idea that Zoe might have had a little precience here.
