Cat Update

According to the vet, it seems that the cat’s problem is just that fur is getting caught in her throat and refusing to go down--hence the choking, gasping, gagging and throwing up as she tries to get it out. So he prescribed something that looks like Vaseline and includes ingredients like soy oil, petroleum jelly, corn syrup, and malt syrup.

*goes to find the tube*

Other ingredients include light mineral oil, and sodium benzoate.

To give this mess to her, it’s put into a syringe and squirted in—at least in theory. In reality, the cat is tracked down outside, wrestled to the ground, gets her mouth forced open, and this stuff then squirted in with the syringe. She just shakes her head because she doesn’t like the taste--she hasn't progressed to spitting it in anyone's face yet.

That usually takes her 2 days before she starts that.

We do this once a day for 5 days, and she’s had her first day of it as of a few hours ago.

In other news, the pirate poll is tied up completely. Only need one more vote in either direction.

EDIT: Just remembered to mention this. We thought she was drinking tons of water--turns out she wasn't. She was just walking up to the bird bath and sniffing and rubbing her face in it. Usually she drinks out of it, too. And what with how long she was over there, it looked like she was drinking tons of water, when in fact she wasn't.

Oh, yeah, that stuff! Thankfully, after awhile, the cats who needed it ended up liking it and eating it on their own. The other one, we'd smear it over his foot, and he'd be compelled to lick it off.

Did your vet recommend any of the hairball foods and snacks out there once the worst of it is over? One of my cats had a serious problem getting them up and once she started eating one of those foods, it helped.

Ah femalt or the various incarnations of it. Yeah. One of our cats loved the stuff (it comes in different flavors in some stores) and the other one hated it. We put it on her nose to get her to clean it off while he would try to knock the tube out of our hands and eat it straight out of the tube.

I suppose you could look for other flavors and see if any of them appeal to your cat. They used to sell some cat treats with femalt inside them as well, I think.

At any rate, I hope your cat is getting better.

Some cats won't drink anything but running water. I have two cats and we have a PetMate brand automatic waterer. One of my cats insists on stepping in the pool of water and only drinking the water that's running down the little slope; it's annoying, but hey, he's drinking water.

I second the suggestion for hairball formula pet food; it's a heck of lot easier than using petromalt stuff. There's also hairball formula treats out there.

Good luck!

Hey -- sorry if this isn't the best place for this, but I'm computer-retarded, and couldn't figure out another way to get in touch w. you regarding your request to join my recs community. I'm actually the only member of said community, mainly because no one's ever asked to join before, but also because I'm extremely picky as to which stories I recommend. (If you just wanted to keep up with what I'm recommending, disregard this)

That said, I'm not necessarily against the idea of having someone else posting to the community. If you asked to join so that you could post recs, I'd like to know what sorts of fic you read/are likely to recommend. (this recs page is sort of my baby, y'know?) Anyway, in that case, send me an email - I'm daanaae@gmail.com - and we can discuss it further.

np -- honestly, it's nice to know that someone else is reading the page. I mostly put the links up so that I don't lose track of them myself.
