Cooking Rice In A Crock Pot...

My aunt has a question, and Mom didn't know the answer, so I thought I would ask my friends list.

Has anyone here ever put rice in a crock pot? If so, what happened? They think it might expand or blow up. It would be in there for overnight, and we would like to know before she tries it.

If it helps at all, it's just chicken and rice in the crock pot.

I've done it. Never had a problem with it. I can't imagine that it would seriously hurt the crockpot unless you put in way, way too much.

Well, on average 1 cup regular uncooked rice = 3 cups cooked. So... I'd use that and go from there, if that helps.

I've made arroz con pollo and jambalaya in a crock pot many times. No problem with the rice. Here's what the little cookbook that came with my crock pot says about rice:

"If cooked rice is called for, stir in with other ingredients; add 1/4 cup extra liquid per 1/4 cup of raw rice. Use long grain converted rice for best results in all-day cooking."

I haven't done white rice yet, but brown rice comes out great and do do the other long cooking grains.

As an interesting side note, my crock pot has some dried black beans going right now. Some will end up as soup, but a lot will be frozen in baggies to be added to other dishes later on :-)

One of the things I do on a regular basis is throw frozen chicken breasts in with rice and slow cook the lot of em all day long. Always turns out yummy. Sadly, I never measure, so...
