Farewell, Scans_Daily

It looks like [community profile] scans_daily was suspended from Livejournal for copyright violation. For those interested, the full story of what happened can be found here and here. For those not willing to read through the comments, it seems that Peter David got upset at seeing a few scans of his work, and complained to Marvel and Livejournal.

In other news, there’s another remake on the horizon. This time, it’s Clue. I’ve seen the Tim Curry version a few times on Soap Net, and liked it.

ETA: And thanks to [personal profile] dramagirl42 for pointing out that the Marvel legal team hadn't done anything yet, so it could have been someone taking advantage of the situation to pull something.

I think it's pretty funny that creators react like this. Not 'ha-ha' funny, but sad funny. I mean, really. How out of touch do you have to be? The internet didn't invent spoilers. People talked on phones before that, gossiping about who Alexis was trying to kill instead of Krystal this week and they mailed letters about books before that. What PAD fails to see is that free promotion is a benefit because it brings in revenue. That's why authors love the internet for the most part, especially small press ones where some of the promo falls on the author.

Once a work goes public, you no longer have control over the response. And I'm sorry if he had a friend die in a fire, but um, I'm not his monitor. I don't know every single person's triggers, nor is it my responsibility. And the people talking lamenting about how the internet has ruined people's manners might be right since I just had this discussion in my online class the other day...but the thing is that a creator doesn't get a free pass for that. A creator gets respect by earning it. Not acting like a douche.

If they ever don't remake something, I'll eat my hat. I also miss Soap Net. I loved Ryan's Hope during insomnia.

Looks like at least a few people are migrating to a backup group over on IJ (same name) for our scanfixes. That's where I'm going till I hear something more official.

I like PD as a writer, mostly, but his off-book antics tend to turn me off him. I'd dropped X-Factor anyway after the SI tie in and horrible art, and I was _almost_ thinking about picking it up again after the recent revelations (revealed in s_d), but now I just won't bother.

As satisfying as it would be to have someone to blame, PD said in his response that while he had complained to Marvel, the legal team had yet to act on his information, so it's likely that someone else it the guilty part. I don't know if you been over yet, but they set up [livejournal.com profile] noscans_daily as a new place to hang.
