RIP, Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze passed away yesterday after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. May he rest in peace. He was 57 years old. It really hasn’t been a good couple of months to be a celebrity. I waited a bit to post it, just to make sure it was true—unlike when someone else said he was dead back in May.

I have never seen a single movie that he was in. For a while there, after checking IMDB I thought I had seen the episode of Whoopi he was in—but apparently not. So I’ve never seen anything of his. However, over in a comment to [personal profile] lithera’s post about it, [personal profile] ladymeag said it better than I could:

“I think part of the reason it is so sad is because he was so gracious and optimistic about his illness. He didn't throw a pity party, didn't use it to seek attention, didn't use it as a publicity stunt - he just made it clear that his life was dedicated to fighting this battle and winning it. It's sad to see someone with such strong conviction and such a real, down-to-earth way of handling it lose that battle.”

He was in a M*A*S*H episode. He played a soldier who volunteered his blood for a buddy and was diagnosed with leukemia, and declined to take a discharge in order to stick with his buddy during his buddy's convalescence.
