Well, This Is...Horrific

Here’s something awful. In Reidland (which is probably a few miles away, probably still classified as Paducah) someone decided to put their baby in the oven to get it to stop crying. It’s made the national news, so for all I know it’s made international news by now.

Nellie just called from Reidland a few minutes ago, since she had to mysteriously leave in a hurry the other day. Turns out these people were the people renting a house from her. And the only reason that baby isn’t dead is because of a faulty latch on the oven that she kept forgetting to have fixed for them. Otherwise, it would have suffocated. It wasn’t turned on, because miraculously it just didn’t work that day.

The reason he did this? The father was hearing voices--the drugs were partly to blame, too.

Nellie was busy filing an eviction notice, and making absolutely sure they would be thrown out. For anyone that hasn’t already heard the story, the baby is now with its grandmother, and the parents have been arrested.

Mom walked through as I was typing this up--she wants everyone to know that not everyone is this awful around here. Since Paducah keeps making the national news for the worst things.

That is horrible. It could have been worse. When I was taking a death and dying course in college, our professor had been a police officer at one time. He had gone on a call where a mother did put her baby in the oven and turned it on. Just thinking about it makes me ill.

Unfortunately, it's the ends of the bell curve - usually the far end - of any group of people who're the ones that make the news.

I actually feel so bad for that guy. Schizophrenia is a really scary illness, and staying on your medication can be a really difficult thing for many people. And when he realized what he had done, he basically turned himself in and made sure his baby was okay.

But now the whole internet, and basically the whole world, is all over it.
