RIP, Dixie Carter

Dixie Carter passed away yesterday, at the age of 70. At this time, her publicist and husband have not disclosed the cause of her death. She was probably best known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women. I loved that character’s tirades, and Mom and I continued to watch the show years after it was canceled. At least until Lifetime opted to stop airing the show a couple years back.

May she rest in peace. My (and Mom’s--and we can quote this from memory at the most random moments, and terrify Dad with it) favorite Julia Sugarbaker tirade is the one that ends, “And that, Marjorie--just so you will know, and your children will someday know--is the night the lights went out in Georgia!” You can watch that scene here.

ETA: Okay, Mom caught a mention of her death on the news, and they said the cause of death was uterine cancer.

Aw, I was so sad to read about that!

My sister and I still quote that tirade all the time too - hee!

I haven't seen that show in years! Must rectify. Badass Southern chicks FTW!

Ah, a classic. RIP, Miz Dixie.

my favorite tirade was the one where their friend was dying of AIDS and she told the woman "I have known you my whole life and if God was handing out venereal diseases for sin you would be in the free clinic ALL THE TIME!"

I loved her character too. She was the only really sane person in the ensemble, and she always gave the impression of hanging on to her sanity just because if the others drove her nuts there would be no one to keep some kind of balance.
