How To Keep LJ From Deleting An Inactive Account

I'm posting this for anyone on my friends list that might not know about it yet. Livejournal has stated in the latest [site community profile] dw_news post that all inactive accounts that haven’t had a post in a certain time frame will be purged. You should receive a notification stating that if a journal applies to you, but there’s always the thing with notifications being down due to [site community profile] dw_news posts. [profile] lj_maintenance posts about it here.

The purging of inactive accounts will take place in late August. According to them, the definition of an inactive account is as follows: “A journal is defined as inactive if it has not been logged into for 24 consecutive months and has only one post (i.e., the welcome post). A community is defined as inactive if has not been updated for 24 consecutive months and has only one entry and no comments.”

All those on my friends list with currently unused RPG related journals—you may need to simply log in, or make one new post. That way, they won’t purge it. Or if you happen to run a community that’s long since dead, and don’t want to lose the older posts in it—make a new post. It should be fine at that point.

For my own use, I’m going to list the journals I need to go to and save by logging in at some point in the next couple of days. Since I’m currently the maintainer of [community profile] relation_ships and [community profile] big_damn_quests, and they haven’t had posts in 3 or 4 years respectively? I’m going to go in and just make a new post later today, so they don’t just vanish in a puff of smoke.

Ones I need to save include:

-[profile] child_of_limbo and [profile] neptune_hacker (which were with [community profile] theatrical_muse)
-[profile] strega_willow. This was the very first RPG journal I ever had, and I don’t intend to lose it.
-[profile] taco_craving, where I played Winifred Burkle long ago, before a game died.

I don’t know what’s going to happen if someone died and their journal is currently used as a memorial to them.

From what I understand from reading the comments on [personal profile] svmadelyn’s post, if someone has a journal deleted, and they posted fanfic to a group? That post is going to be gone. So start saving fanfic from others that haven’t been around in years just in case.

ETA: Also? As I hit post, LJ erased everything I said. So I’m posting this again, and hoping it works.

ETA 2: Oh, thank goodness. It worked.

Apparently there are processes in place to spare "memorial" journals such as these.

Reading that same post, comments will also be purged. Um... That means whole conversations will be gone potentially.

From what I understand, only the comments/comm-posts of journals that were supended/banned will be deleted (because they're usually being banned for posting inappropriate content). For inactive journals, I *think* comments and comm posts will remain.

But I could be wrong...

I'd glanced over that announcement when it came. I've got two journals I use, one for backup and the other for testing layouts, that will need to be posted to and saved.

Scary!

I don't know, I think the "and" in those "defined as inactive if..." statements is important. An old roleplaying journal with 57 posts that hasn't been updated in two years does not qualify for "and has only one post (i.e., the welcome post)."

If they'd said "or" I'd be with you on this one. Personally I'm going to wait and see if they give me any two week notices on my old rp journals, just out of curiosity. :)
