It was probably Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark, by Alvin Schwartz--along with the two sequels. That, and the Fear Street books by R.L. Stine--specifically, the series of books that dealt with an evil spirit killing cheerleaders in various ways. I vividly remember one death by hot shower.

Another favorite was The Last Vampire series of novels by Christopher Pike, as well as quite a few Choose Your Own Adventure books. I normally ended up possessed or dead in my endings, though. Or turned into a vampire. Those were my favorite endings.

Some kids liked Cinderella, I liked The Hearse Song. What can I say?

I remember that shower death although I don't recall much more about them. I do recall that the first of those Fear Street books kept me up all night one time.

I remember in one of them Corky herself got possessed and jumped into a frozen river to drive out the evil spirit. I think that was called The New Evil, or something along those lines. In another, it was driven out by drowning someone in the bath.

It was The First Evil (which makes me think Buffy), The Second Evil, The Third Evil, The New Evil--and, I recently discovered, one more. Evil Lives.

ETA: Quickly checking Amazon shows that it was 4 years between The New Evil, and Evil Lives, which would explain why I didn't know it. I was busy in 1998.

Hee! That was one of my favourite series of books in the R. L. Stine series too! I loved the one where it was Corky who was possessed. And wasn't it Bobbi who died by shower?

I also collected Chistopher Pike books. Including The Last Vampire series. Yeah, I was also a horror fan at a young age.

Yes, that was her. And later in either that book or another, Corky dreams that Bobbi has returned as a rotting corpse.

One of my most vivid memories of those books is when Corky is possessed, and as she tries to walk down the stairs--I think the evil spirit tries to make her think there are blades on each step that will cut her feet to ribbons?
