Extra Icons

With the [profile] x_meggan journal, the free paid account has now expired. However, unlike what I understood, all 30 icons did not remain active. I can only have access to 15 of them (and it's random as to which ones) when I comment with that journal now. I believed that when I signed up for that you could keep all 30--active, and you just couldn't have more or have access to the other paid account features. Has this happened to anyone else who did the paid account trial offer?

Back to the Plus Account number of icons now.

That's not what I understood either, ugh. [livejournal.com profile] x_network's trial expires after today, will let you know.

I was lazy and never actually added more than the 15 I had before, and now I can't add any more. I was of the same understanding, do the free trial and you'd get upped to 30 pics, but alas. :/

LJ always makes extra icons inactive after paid time expires, or the extra userpic add-on expires. I think it costs $6 per year to add 15 userpics to each account. With Crystal's account, every so often I pay for a month or two and choose enough add-on packages to have over 100 userpics. With Jan's account, I paid to have an additional 20 userpics added on for a year.

All of the userpics will remain on the site for six months; this is why I pay to upgrade Crystal's account at least once every six months. Otherwise, all of the pretty pictures would go away. From what I understand, the userpics that remain active are not really random, they're supposed to be the 15 you used most when posting in the past month. That could have changed, I know I was confused when certain icons wound up active the last time I let Crystal's paid time expire, but before then I had success with choosing which icons I wanted to be able to use until the next time I gave LJ my money.

LJ is trying to encourage people to get paid accounts. If all 30 icons remained active, there wouldn't be a reason for people to pay the site to have more icons. They're trying to give people a taste of what it's like, and while I realize there's more to a paid account than just userpics, that's really the only reason I do it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Weird thing is, when I reverted from paid back to Basic (I was one of the last of the Basic Accounts before they forced everyone into Pluses), the six that I was left with were my current default and the five most recently uploaded icons.

That's a definite possibility. The last time my paid time and extra userpics expired, from my count I actually wound up with more than 15 userpics (a glitch or something, I guess) and a few of those were ones I'd just created.

What I did then (and will do again as my paid time expires in a week!) is make several locked posts that only I can see and purposely use the userpics I want to remain active. I've wondered how it would work if I did that and then paid to have 30 userpics; would I then get the other 15 most-used icons, would they be the newest ones, or what?

Yeah, I though that would happen. That's also why I was iffy about trialling the two weeks free since I've got an icon add-on package at the moment. LJ has had software glitches in the past *cough* notifications *cough* and I wasn't risking the paid icon space vanishing along with the trial account.

The thing that really irks me isn't that the make the icons inactive - it's that you can't upload any new active icons until after you've deleted all your old ones.

Bait and switch.
