Rest in peace, Elisabeth Sladen

I'm stunned. I’m hearing that Elisabeth Sladen has passed away from cancer, at the age of 63. [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho has a post about it over here, while the Twitter confirmation is here. It was confirmed by the BBC.

My deepest sympathies to all her family and friends for their loss. While I wasn’t lucky enough to have grown up with her like those in the UK, I did love her performance as Sarah Jane Smith in the episodes with her that I’ve managed to see in both Doctor Who, and The Sarah Jane Adventures. She will be truly, deeply missed. May she rest in peace.

I hadn't heard. I am stunned and in shock. I grew up watching her on Doctor Who and it's almost like a member of the family is gone. First Nicholas Courtney and now Lis.

Totally unexpected, and very sad. Sarah Jane was one of my favorite characters from the whole Who-verse, and the actress was a large part of that. She will be missed.

That's because she was intensely private and no one outside her immediate family and friends knew, apart from the SJA people - and they weren't talking.

That, oddly, makes a lot of sense. The DW brand is pretty culturally popular and had the sharks known they'd never leave her in peace. Still breaks the heart because she must have used so much strength in making sure that should stay private did.

I rather selfishly wish she had allowed a small announcement so that her passing wouldn't have been such a devastating shock. Losing Nick Courtney was shocking enough, but at least I already knew Nick had been ill for a while so it wasn't quite as devastating.

I know, but looking at from if I were in the family? I completely understand the decision. If you know there's a chance you won't survive, then you've a desire to be selfish enough to enjoy the time you have with the ones whom you love and care for. It just stinks how it ripples out.
