The Rain

McCracken County has declared a state of emergency, so that we can get all the help we need when this finally ends. The state of emergency is from April 24th, until. That's it. Just until, since we don't have an actual ending yet. However, the schools aren't closing for now, because they've already set a date for graduation and testing (I don't know if it's SAT, ACT, or something else) and they don't want to miss more school.

Cairo, Illinois flooded, because their flood gates weren't tall enough. In Louisville, you need a canoe to get around. Poplar Bluff is evacuating, and I think Karnak, Illinois is considering it.

Last night, we have penny sized hail--here, we had 60 mph winds, torrential rain, and some bad moments. Murray had 100 mph winds, trees thrown around, tornadoes, power lines down, the poles holding up the lines snapped in half, and flooding. Murray State University opted to close this morning, and it's rare when they do that.

Despite that, we got 1.16 inches of rain last night, which doesn't sound right. The good news is, today there isn't any rain. The bad news? It starts again, worse, tonight. And it lasts all night long, dumping at least 6 more inches. Hail, chance of tornadoes, the works. If we aren't underwater, too, it should end around 5 AM tomorrow. So in a little while, I'm going to try to get a nap. Since I haven't had a stretch of uninterrupted sleep since this all started around Friday.

During all this, the people for the Quilt Show have arrived. Officials moved them from near the flood wall, down to Kentucky Oaks Mall. The hotel they're at may or may not need to be moved if it floods.

A weather guy on the local news lost it with a case of the giggles for a moment or two. He was too tired, but I've heard he got some sleep since then. I halfway joked that Dad should steal a canoe for us, and he considered it for a long moment.

Happily, after everything Toby's fine. He has the right idea, and is taking a nap in his little house during the day.

ETA: Oh, right. The flood wall. For that, flood stage is 36 feet. It's currently 49.1 feet--they sent someone behind it after it was closed, to confirm that the little area you drive through is underwater, and it is. By May 3rd, it should crest at 55 feet.

It's starting to look like someone read a passage they shouldn't have from the Necronomicon.

Ye gods.

I know the internet jokes about heavy snowfall as Snowpocalypse, but Springpocalypse is becoming more apt every year.

Stay safe.

Neep! Stay safe!

Someone at copperbadge's Cafe was hoping someone could conjure all this rain down to Texas to deal with the drought/wildfires they're having.

You guys are having a rough time of it. And I don't like the sound of that open ended state of emergency. We're still sitting under a National state of emergency nine weeks after our 'event', with no sign of it being lifted!

Stay safe and dry, and remember to run if you see a tornado coming.
