Dear Yuletide 2013 Letter
The fandoms I requested this time around are: Fright Night (1985), The Librarian (Movies), Dark Shadows (1991), Sleepy Hollow (TV), The Real Ghostbusters, and Murder By Death (1976).
To the author who was assigned me: Thank you for choosing to write me a story for Yuletide. I’m usually easy to please when it comes to fanfic written for me. My likes and dislikes, copied from a Yuletide letter I wrote a few years back: I’m fine with fanfic that’s a bit of a darker tone, so long as it doesn’t go into PWP, BDSM, rape, or incest territories.
I am equally fine with fluff or hurt/comfort, as well as people causing massive amounts of mayhem while possessed. Fine with gen, het, or slash, as long as it isn’t what I mentioned above. If you want to do anything pairing free, that is completely fine with me. For me, the characterization is the most important aspect of the story, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s humor or angst or somewhere in between--so just do your best. Use your own judgment for what works from the prompts I’ve provided, and I’m sure I’ll love it.
Fright Night (1985)
The prompt:
Peter Vincent has done well against vampires. What happens when he and Charley are confronted with a zombie apocalypse? How do they react, and just how dire do things get for them? Are they in serious denial about the possibility of other creatures being out there, after vampires? Make this as humorous or terrifying as you wish, in keeping with the spirit of the film. If the muse strikes and it’s another creature that goes bump in the night, like a werewolf, (not just a vampire becoming a wolf, such as Evil Ed did) or ghosts or some other demonic type, I would be equally happy.
I’ve developed a certain fondness for this movie, and would just love to see any interaction with other entities of the supernatural. If you don’t feel like writing the above prompt, I have a few other ideas that I’ll just toss out there. What if Jerry Dandrige was resurrected, shortly after the events of the first film? How would Peter Vincent deal with this knowledge? Would he try to hide it from Amy and Charlie out of fear, or would he tell them the truth while watching for signs of them turning? How would Amy deal with the fallout of this? Another: During the events of the first movie, Peter Vincent is the one who gets bitten, rather than Ed. How are things different?
The Librarian (Movies)
In The Librarian: Return to King Solomon’s Mine, we saw a glimpse of Pan’s flute. What’s the story behind them acquiring it? It can be as bizarre, or funny as you wish.
You can make it as corny and out there as the movies, and I’ll love it--if you come up with a better idea than Pan's flute and would rather use whatever that is, go for it. I’m just desperate to see any fanfic at all in this fandom. If you want to do something set after or during the third movie, that's fine, too.
Dark Shadows (1991)
At the end of the 1991 series, Maggie was still possessed by Angelique and Victoria knew Barnabas was a vampire. How would everyone deal with Angelique? Would Victoria shelve the revelation for now, or make everyone deal with it right then, at the height of the emotion? Make the outcome of Angelique as scary as you wish, hopping from body to body, or whatever you so desire. Since Quentin was slated to appear in season 2 before the show was cancelled, would his ghost have played a role in her defeat?
Any fanfic from this version of the series is welcome. Other ideas to toss out there, if you’d rather have one of these: How would the Leviathan storyline be handled in this version? Would those possessed by Angelique in the past somehow be more vulnerable to their control? Just do whichever you feel most comfortable with, and I’m sure that I will enjoy it.
Sleepy Hollow (TV)
Ichabod Crane discovers the festivities of Halloween for the first time, and the dark sense of humor surrounding the holiday. How hard is it to track a demon or know if the Headless Horseman is due to slaughter another soul, when so many people choose to dress as such on one dark night? In lieu of this, you could also have him discover the concept of trick-or-treat, or something similar, or stumble onto the concept of a slasher movie marathon to celebrate the holiday. With Abbie explaining that, yes, it is entertainment, while explaining the concept of (very similar sounding, after episode 3) Freddy Krueger.
So long as you end up with something in keeping with the spirit/general offbeat tone of the series as it's gone so far, I’m sure that I’ll enjoy it. It doesn’t have to be a quiet evening with the characters--feel free to have a Monster of the Week of some sort take advantage of the season.
The Real Ghostbusters
What if Peter was successful at opening the containment unit, while he was possessed by Watt? How would the guys have tried to stop him or save him, while simultaneously dealing with all the ghosts they had captured escaping?
Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies—this extends to my love of Real Ghostbusters. The episode where Peter was possessed by Watt was one of my favorites. However, if you would rather do something like I’m fine with Egon/Janine, if you’re a fan of that pairing. Another idea is having Egon and Ray worry that they’ve found signs pointing to some foe bigger than Gozer in mythology that’s coming, and what to do from there, when it comes to making sure the containment unit cannot be opened yet again.
If you need to refresh your memory, the episode with Watt is Mrs. Roger's Neighborhood, and can be viewed here.
Murder By Death (1976)
Another detective was meant to arrive at the scene rather late—the deleted footage should be available on Youtube, insinuating that it was Sherlock Holmes. Is there a round 2 of the murder mystery? Would there be a botched attempt to warn the newcomer (and his companion) from Jessica Marbles? Or Dick Charleston, as he tries to get out to get Dora some medical attention? What if this new detective arrived right in the middle of the final revelations?
This is one of my favorite murder mystery spoofs, along the same lines as Clue. The deleted scene (involving Sidney Wang and son meeting up with the duo) I mention in my prompt can be found here. Keep it in line with the tone of the movie, and whatever you come up with is bound to be great.
