Last Night's Total

This year, despite the rain, we ended up having a grand total of 41 trick-or-treaters. Word appeared to spread that I had Twizzlers to give away, because several children and suspiciously older teens requested them before I even brought the bowl to them. One even said, “They told me you had Twizzlers. I want those instead.”

The first came around 5 PM, and the other 40 started coming at 7 PM. I ran out of candy and had to turn out the lights around 8 PM—before the next wave appeared at the end of the street. The final one was a teen (not in a costume--but the second to last, her friend, was) that was disappointed because she "thought it would be livelier around here, but it's dead!"

41?? That is amazing. The kids in my neighborhood don't go door to door -- I figure they all go to parties or something. I think we had five kids, and a couple of teens.

Around here, every church holds Trunk-or-Treat (put candy in the trunk of the car, let kids get what they want) at the same time trick-or-treating should be. Also, downtown one particular street is designated the safe area to go.

So between that and the rain, we're lucky to have as many as we did. Last year, it was 64.

I've discovered that people will even go trick-or-treating on this particular street as a tornado siren blares--it happened year before last. It won't stop them. The parents (if you warn them and the sirens warn them and the news warns them, and the wind is picking up) don't care. They're taking the kids if it kills them.

Around here, if you're on a particular road it counts as the city, and you get a lot of kids. If you're a handful of streets over, it counts as outside the city (when it isn't; it's actually in a busy spot) and nobody shows up.

(Never handed out candy in costume--since it's a toss of the coin if kids show up each year, I would dress up for nothing if they didn't.)
