Yuletide Is Coming

Yuletide is coming earlier than expected this year. Nominations begin on September 9th; sign-ups begin on October 1st.

I’m currently watching numerous episodes of the original Dark Shadows, after stumbling across four DVD sets purchased in 2003, but never opened. I’m filling in the gaps by watching what has been uploaded to Youtube by various people. I rewatched all of the 1991 version for the Into A Bar story. (Which is sort of still in progress, but on hold for right now as I work on a bit of a plot issue.)

I know that I will definitely nominate Crimson Peak. The story I wrote last year was so much fun for me to write, even if it grew to almost impossible lengths and became rather dark. I will likely nominate Dark Shadows (1991), and hope that someone else nominates the 60’s version of the show.

My 'Read/Watch Before Yuletide' list is rather long, but here are the highlights.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark sounds familiar but I just can't place it. What's it about?

The 2010 version is Guillermo del Toro's remake of a 1973 tv movie of the same name. Little demon/imp creatures haunt a house. I remember the trailer for the 2010 version involved a little kid hiding under the covers. She thinks she's safe, and has a flashlight--only for a creature to appear under there with her, I believe.

I've only just started watching Penny Dreadful, and have just reached episode 4. The entire series is available for viewing, right here.

It wasn't on my list, but I'm also reading Jane Eyre, since I recall someone nominating it another previous Yuletide. I'm also watching the Louis Jourdan version of Dracula.

I haven't made it to Kolchak just yet, but I'll be giving it a shot soon.

The tv series is just as good as The Night Stalker in my opinion. In case you are tempted there was an updated tv version of The Night Stalker, but it wasn't as good and it didn't last long. I don't recommend it.

I might check out the 1973 version of Don't Be Afraid of the Dark first.

I haven;t read Jayne Eyre either, but it can be had on Gutenberg Project for free so I'll have to download it sometime.

The tv series is just as good as The Night Stalker in my opinion. In case you are tempted there was an updated tv version of The Night Stalker, but it wasn't as good and it didn't last long. I don't recommend it.

I remember that, actually. They did a Kojak remake around that same time, too. I never heard anything good about the Kolchak remake, so avoided it. Once I finish Penny Dreadful, I'll head on over to Youtube for the original version.

Now that's odd. I didn't hear about the Kojak remake. Who did they get to play Kojak?

Ving Rhames. He still said "Who loves ya, baby." He still had the lollipop, and that may have been the only connection to the original, from the little I heard. It lasted 9 episodes in 2005, before it was canceled. I just checked Wikipedia to confirm the channel--it aired on USA Network.

I had to look him up on IMDB since the name did not ring a bell even though his face looked familiar. I haven't seen him in anything except maybe the 2 episodes of the original Miami Vice way back when.

Just checked, and it would appear that I only know him from Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs. (At the very least, I recall his character name of Leroy from there, but not much of the character, as it didn't really focus on him.)
