Odd Question...

I have a strange question. Mom had a root canal, and had a bit of a problem with the antibiotics. She was going to take one, and dumped it all in a glass of water by accident.

The antibiotic capsules are sticky now. She wants to know if it's still safe to take. The rest of them were salvaged from the glass of water, and are laying on a paper towel.

I told you it was a weird problem...

I have it on the authority of my dear old friend that the outside is just gelatin and should still be fine to take even if sticky.

I think the sticky is just the part on the outside that makes pills go down easily. They might be a little more unpleasant to take, but I think they're still okay. Of course, you should double-check, but I'm fairly certain they're all right. :)

If it were just the one she was about to take, I'd say no problem, but the whole bottle? If the internal contents of the capsules didn't get wet, they may be safe, but I'd take them to the pharmacy. Moisture is not good for drugs. It's one of the reasons they tell you not to store your medicine in the bathroom cabinet.

Well, the gelatin will have dissolved a bit on the outside so she should take them faster (no letting them sit on her tongue while she gets a glass of water, or whatever), but they should be okay.

If they are capsules, they are designed to release slowly in her body. The wet, gelatin shields are now damaged and may affect the way the medication is disbursed in her stomach.

If you can't have the pharmacy replaced them, or have the dentist call for more to be filled, I would let them all dry out on the kitchen counter -- thoroughly -- and then take them as prescribed.
