The Sci-Fi Channel Gets A New Name

Posting in between people burning limbs (still cleaning up post-ice storm)--the wind finally took a turn where it isn’t blowing over here. They're apparently doing it so the people that keep coming around to get rid of branches and assorted debris won't have as much to do.

The Sci-Fi Channel is changing their name. They will call themselves…The Syfy Channel. Honestly? They haven’t been that great for a few years now, what with the wrestling. And, apparently, a video game competition that they air once a week… Years ago, they had marathons of actual science fiction and it was good. I loved when they had Dark Shadows marathons. And without them showing old horror movies, I never would have seen The World of Dracula…which I’m still hopelessly trying to find again. There’s also a great discussion about the Sci-Fi Channel’s past and how bad it is now over here in [personal profile] settiai’s journal.

10 Annoying Habits of a Geeky Spouse. Personally, I don’t find any of this annoying.

In other news, I’ve gone back through old entries in this journal, to find any memes that could give me another idea for a fanfic, so that I can then join the Finish-A-Thon. As of when I quit for the evening yesterday, I had made it back to December of 2007. I managed to dig up a meme (and also saw that March 29th is Love Your Beta Day, if anyone wants to continue that) that I’ll spread again:

If you had me under your command and could make me write anything , regardless of whether or not I know the fandom or if anybody even writes fic in that fandom for Doctor Who/Torchwood, no matter how crack-addled it might be, what would you love to see me write?

ETA: Found another link about the Sci-Fi Channel’s name change, for those that are interested. They want to move away from science fiction and geeks, according to what the article says. They also say that geeks are people that live in their parents' basements in the interview...

Oh, man, remember way back when they used to play old sci-fi shows that aired for, like, five minutes in the seventies or whatever, and they'd run an episode every day at lunchtime? I caught on so many great trashy sci-fi shows that way. Manimal! The Powers of Matthew Starr! Misfits of Science! I mean, REALLY.

I LOVED that. Finally, I could see them again when I owned a VCR! (That most of them were crap in retrospect had nothing to do with it.)

As for the annoying habits - none of them are annoying.

Me neither. It smacks of intelligence, imagination, enthusiasm, and community spirit. And a sense of humour. Something we could do with more of.

And as for prompts, Torchwood seems to have been created to tidy up after the Doctor. What other messes (other than the ones already seen) of the Doctor's has TW3 seen fit to stick its oar into?

If it's recognition that they're not really a Sci-Fi channel anymore, that's one thing, I'm more worried that it's a license not to even bother to pretend to be a Sci-Fi related channel anymore, and they'll produce more non-SF crap and less good stuff (even though we don't get the channel directly, we still get a lot of their shows).

Ah well, strikes me as more of a branding issue since it sounds the same, and maybe it'll make way for someone to try a "Science Fiction Channel" someday. ;)

Wrestling. What on Earth were they thinking? *shakes head* Maybe this'll pave the way for more sci-fi themed channels? *hopes*

So stealing your meme because I am lame. Just out of curiosity, what does one do for 'Love Your Beta Day'? Give more paper? *grins*

I wonder if this is why SyFy portal changed their name. It's just weird. They do still do the marathons (though not so much with the Dark Shadow) and the weird scifi b-films (though usually seems to be some horror gigantic animal thing lately). But WTF with the wrestling?

LOL - Had to laugh at the 10 annoying habits. I do all of them, but people find these annoying?

This is all just a ploy to show more wrestling. D:

Other than BSG (which is soon to come to an end), what other good shows do they have anymore? They got rid of SG:1, and I didn't care for Atlantis. Anything?

I don't mind the paranormal shows because that is in spirit with sci-fi. I

The naming is just stupid. Most sci-fi fans know that sci-fi usually has some brands of fantasy elements. It's very hard to find pure science-fiction. Even BSG has some fantasy elements in it.

And those habits are annoying? Fraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

I wouldn't mind some reality shows if they were in the spirit of science-fiction. Wrestling is not in the spirit of science fiction. Case in point, Stan Lee's superhero show and Ghost Hunters was/are in that spirit. The gaming show isn't so much.

And I don't live in my parents basement, I have my own room, thanks.

You know, someone should give them a picture of David Tennant and John Barrowman. Have they heard them talk about watching Doctor Who when they were kids? That reeks of GEEKDOM! And Nicholas Cage named his son Kal-El. GEEKS! Not just in parent's basements. (And that sentence is just so insulting and stupid.)

SciLIE. Or SyLIE now, I guess. Fuck 'em, I'm sticking with Space.

Syfy is less strange than Sci-Fi? And having someone even formally associated with your network essentially saying that people who like (and watch, I presume) sci-fi are losers in public? Bang-up public relations there, boys.

Um... wouldn't it be easier/cleaner for the disposal crews to get branches that aren't all burnt and charcoally? Or am I brilliantly missing the point?

10 Annoying Habits of a Geeky Spouse. Personally, I don’t find any of this annoying.

Good. I'm going to hold you to this ;)
Besides, it's not like I've done all ten at the same time...

Syfy? For real? I mean, biiiig change, really hooks into the modern way of thinking. Name it the way it's texted... that's one of the stupidest things I've read all week, and I've read some doozies. I'm sure that the time saved from not coding two extra characters makes all the difference in their day... How about they send messages to people who'd type the whole thing in the first place?

As for the other quotes; well, as one of these antisocial basement dwellers (in spirit if not in fact), all I can say once I've recovered from near-lethal eyerolling is that my hatred of the mundanes grows just that little bit more each day... (of course, we'd be all right if we were sports or reality fans...)

And on that note of mundanes, if anyone ever needs to re-cast Bester... ;)
*small salute* Be seeing you.
