Okay, Dad managed to find a new computer at Best Buy. However, due to the fact that they are (according to one salesperson) going out of business in January, we would not be able to get any sort of guarantee or warranty.
So Dad opted to go elsewhere. Because of a brochure they gave him, he knows what to get. I don't know the brand name, but it's got three processors in it. Ours? Has just the one. We would still be able to use the same monitor. Not sure about the keyboard, but we might have to end up with a new one. And apparently, the only ones they sell these days are black ones.
Currently, I'm saving any last things to the external hard drive, while he goes to Connecting Point (local computer place) and Office Depot. One of the only other places he could think of around here was Office Max, but they went out of business.
The brand of computer that's dying lasted 6 years--it was Compaq Presario. Apparently, Compaq was taken over by Hewlett-Packard somewhere along the way, because they don't sell Compaq anymore.
Edit: Okay, as of 12:30, Dad bought a new computer! It's Hewlett-Packard, and the people at Connecting Point say that's just as good as Compaq, and is actually the same thing, rather than just being bought out by them. I can still use my old keyboard and monitor. The mouse should be good. It has 3 GB of RAM. It uses Windows XP. Which is good, because the lady there said that Vista causes problems with a lot of the programs that we would probably use.
The one he saw in the brochure was a brand called Acers, I think he said.
He'll save all of his stuff either tonight, or tomorrow morning, and then start on setting it up probably later tomorrow. I've got almost everything of mine in the external hard drive now.
