Let’s do the Fifteen Characters Meme. I saw it going around again a little while ago, and a quick check shows that I haven’t done this one since January.

1) Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"

3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

Here, have a meme that’s been taken from so very many people around the reading list.

Rules: Go to your AO3 works page, expand all the filters, and answer the following questions!

Fanfic:34 works

What’re your first and second most common work ratings?
Teen And Up Audiences (20)
General Audiences (11)

What’s your most common archive warning?
No Archive Warnings Apply (31)

Least common?
Major Character Death (2). And I’m pretty sure both of those were Jonathan Harker getting a temporary death while a vampire.

Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?

I’m not certain. However, I was adventurous enough to actually tackle something over 100,000 words, so I’ll have to go with probably. In terms of content, it would really depend on the fandom and plot.

How many stories have you made in each pairing category?

Gen (27)
F/M (6)
M/M (4)
F/F (2)

Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?

Mostly accidental. I’m not actively looking to write any particular kind of pairing, and it simply happens whenever it does. I suspect that much gen comes about through having imported the Doctor Who fanfics, and a couple Firefly fanfics that I wrote so very long ago.

What are your top 4 fandoms by numbers?

Doctor Who is apparently in there twice through a small glitch, but I’m counting it as once for this: Doctor Who (11) and Doctor Who (2005) (5)
Firefly (2)
Dracula - Bram Stoker (2)
Dracula (TV 1968) (2)

Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?

I’m no longer active in Doctor Who, and have not been for many years. I moved on from Firefly a long time ago, and never looked back. For the last two, still hang out there no matter how quiet it is.

What are your top 4 relationship tags?
Count Dracula/Jonathan Harker (3)
Jonathan Harker/Mina Harker (2)
Mina Harker/Lucy Westenra (2)
Mina Harker/John Seward (2)

Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?

It’s pretty much exactly as I expected.

What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2? I went with top 3 since the top 2 overlap.
Most Used:
Fluff and Humor (8)
Friendship (6)

Bottom Two
Crossover (3)
Drabble (3)

What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into an fic?

I sort of did with the crossover and friendship, with that crossover between Dark Shadows and Dracula. Granted, it wasn’t a drabble. Nor was it fluff, since Jonathan’s brain fever induced hallucinations during his escape from the castle didn’t exactly have him veering towards imaginings of fluffy bunnies (perhaps with fangs, though that leads to either Bunnicula or Monty Python and given how distraught he was, he certainly didn’t see that).

How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?

When there is a WIP, I wait until it’s finished prior to uploading it to Ao3. If I drifted away from something or real life went after me, I wouldn’t want to leave anyone hanging if someone had chosen to read it. It took 2 years to finish The Soft Whispers of the Dead, so that would have been cruel to leave it open ended at any point in time when I was still rewriting huge chunks of story at any given time.

[personal profile] arduinna selected these three for me to talk about. I’m also reposting the rules in case someone wanted to do this, too.

This one was made by [livejournal.com profile] perletwo_ljcozy. I have no idea what issue of the original New Mutants that panel comes from. I’ve been tempted to delete it a few times, since I almost never have the opportunity to use it.

Kitty and Kurt walking along a cliff (I think?) on Muir Island, around the first issue of the original Excalibur. It would have been shortly after they mistakenly believed the X-Men were killed in Dallas, and right after Kurt awakened from his coma. I’ve used it for at least one or two serious posts, and love the art style by Alan Davis. [livejournal.com profile] alterian made it.

This is Elizabeth from Curse of Frankenstein (1957). I believe the scene involves her going snooping to find out what Victor is hiding from her, and she’s moments from discovering the creature. [personal profile] thisbluespirit made this icon for me for the latest round of Fandom Stocking.

Icon Meme

1. Comment to this entry saying 'Ooo Shiny!' and I will pick 3 of your icons/userpics.
2. Make an entry in your own journal (or just reply if you prefer) and talk about the icons I picked!

First, three selected by [personal profile] teigh_corvus:

This one is a quote from Dracula (1968). Seward has had enough of all of Van Helsing’s supernatural discussions. I’ll quote myself, because I remembered that someone else selected this one in the past:

This is a wonderful line that Seward shouted at Van Helsing in Dracula (1968) during everything that goes down with Lucy being bitten by Dracula, and Seward didn’t want to hear Van Helsing. Well, not until later, when a particular illustration looked just like Dracula, and then it was Van Helsing denying it could be possible. The icon was made by [personal profile] thisbluespirit.

This is a really old one, from back when I was still new to the Doctor Who fandom, and only using Livejournal. Jack and Rose, dancing in front of Big Ben in the middle of a London air raid. I meant to delete it long ago, but never had. Made by atellix.

Again, this is something from Dracula (1968). One of the illustrations presented from one of Van Helsing’s books. Seward realizes that Dracula is their vampire from it, while Van Helsing at first doesn’t think so, unwisely thinking Seward is just jealous of Dracula at first. The icon was made by [personal profile] thisbluespirit.

Three selected by [personal profile] musyc:

While I’m not a fan of Winnie the Pooh or any of his friends, I did like this particular Yuletide focused icon. I just never find a need to use it, probably due to having numerous Yuletide focused ones. Made by [personal profile] chomiji.

This icon is a quote from the Dracula novel, from when Jonathan Harker is in the castle, and has only just met the Count. The exact quote is this: “I am all in a sea of wonders. I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul. God keep me, if only for the sake of those dear to me!” He thinks it after being told that his bedroom is ready, and that he can sleep late if he likes.

This is distressing to Jonathan, it seems (and comes right after he’s made nauseous from the Count’s breath, so that and the wolves howling got to him). The icon was made by [personal profile] thisbluespirit.

This is the cover of one of many gothic novels. I have no idea which particular novel it would originate from. It was made by [personal profile] sallymn, and honestly feels like a good fit for [community profile] hidden_passages.

I’ll be answering all of those questions for the Fifteen Characters Meme tomorrow. Feel free to toss a few more into the fray before I get to them if you like!

I’m only taking a piece of this meme from [personal profile] moetushie.

I only wrote two stories in 2018, so I’m not that prolific. However, one of them was over 100,000 words long, so there you go. It might have become three stories for the year, if I hadn’t defaulted on Yuletide due to real life issues. Overall, I’m impressed that I managed to write as much as I did.

May 2018

The Fire And Blood of Memory Were Swiftly Stoked (Dark Shadows/Dracula – Bram Stoker; 2 chapters, 11,651 words; written for the Into A Bar ficathon. Rating: Teen and Up)

September 2018

The Soft Whispers of the Dead (Dracula 1968; 10 chapters, 100,023 words. Pairings: Count Dracula/Jonathan Harker, Jonathan Harker/Mina Harker, John Seward/Lucy Weston, Mina Harker/Lucy Weston, Mina Harker/John Seward). Rating: Teen and Up

I found this meme via at least three rss feeds that I happen to have here on Dreamwidth for a few Tumblr (to no one's surprise, the rss feeds were gothic horror/gothic romance/Dracula related ones I stumbled upon) people, and--seeing as I don't use Tumblr--I reworded it just a tad (reblog to repost; followers to reading list) to suit Dreamwidth.

Repost this if you want your reading list to tell you which fictional character you remind them of.
calliopes_pen: (lost_spook Mina covets the ring)
Here, have a couple fanfic focused memes that I've seen floating around. I'm posting them both, since they're almost the same sort of thing.

The first one:

If you were asked to pick one scene, one shot, one detail, one moment of some kind out of all the things I've written and say "This, this, for whatever reason, I remember, this is something that struck home with me, that I wanted to keep," what would it be?

And the second:

Quote a bit of my writing at me. Find that one story of mine that you really like, and find a sentence or a paragraph that presses your prose-buttons in the right way, and comment here with it.

For those that might have used it, Imzy is shutting down. I never made a single post or comment, but I had registered at some point. I just never went back after that.

Rosario Dawson is reportedly in talks to play Cecilia Reyes in the New Mutants film; also, that film will apparently go full on horror. I'm not sure what to think about that.

Edit: Correction, it's three things of note. It turns out the Icelandic version of Dracula--Powers of Darkness--is really Swedish.

From the article: "First he assumed that Makt myrkranna would be a straight translation of the Swedish publication, but then he found out that the Swedish text is more complete and contains scenes neither described in Dracula nor in Makt myrkranna. And the madman Renfield is still in the story, among others."

So there's that! And on World Dracula Day, no less.

And here’s a meme that I thought it might be fun to try.

meme: If you were to remix one of my stories, 1.) what would it be and 2.) what would you do. TELL ME.

For all of my stories, it’s sort of spread out across Ao3 and the ‘fanfic I’ve written tag’.

Because I think we all need some mindless stuff at the moment, have a meme that I took from [personal profile] musesfool.

Cite the final line of five of your fics – your favorites, or the most recent ones.

1. There was still happiness yet to come...for both the living, as well as for the undead. Wrap The Cloak Of Night Around His Shoulders. Dracula (1968), following the wedding between Seward and Mina.

2. With this bittersweet chapter concluded, they would see to the rest of their lives. Let The Shadows Become Your Shroud. Crimson Peak (2015). That’s basically Alan and Edith limping off to see to their wounds, mourn Thomas, and just live, in the aftermath of a massive exorcism of a ghost from reality itself.

3. There was solace in the shadows, for both young and old vampires alike. Give Your Soul To The Night. Fright Night (1985). Jerry is revelling in winning as quietly as he can, while settling down for a nap, surrounded by turned teenagers, in his coffin in the basement.

4. Only the dead remained. Blood Begets A Curse Anew. Legend (1985). It probably is as grim as it sounds, as Darkness basically teleported a changed Lili (help me; I keep writing Lucy) out of the dining hall, after teleporting the goblins away to somewhere presumably unpleasant. Oh, and should anyone be curious about this story, do beware of a bit of animal sacrifice at the beginning, and references to torture in the middle.

5. And we gladly feast on those that would subdue us. Because We’re Addamses. Wednesday Addams is thinking, and thereby reiterating a statement made in the first Addams Family film.

Taken from many people, here’s a fanfic focused meme.

Choose a fic and 1 (or more) question(s) from the list below:

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
2: What scene did you first put down?
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
5: What part was hardest to write?
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
7: Where did the title come from?
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
11: What do you like best about this fic?
12: What do you like least about this fic?
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

My fanfic (from Yuletides past, mainly) can be found here at Ao3. Or here at Teaspoon, where I last added anything from Doctor Who seven years ago.

Or you can peer into the depths of a tag called ‘fanfic I’ve written.’ There’s one Firefly fanfic down there somewhere, and quite a few drabbles for that and Buffy from back when I was starting to dabble in fanfic for the first time.

Grab the nearest book, flip to page 117, the second sentence is your life in 2017.

"Our bird when he found the cage open would not fly, so all our subtle arrangements were for nought."

The nearest book was Dracula, by Bram Stoker, thanks to the fanfic I'm working on for Dracula (1968). A Bantam Classic edition from 2004. That was from Dr. Seward's diary entry, when they were just trying to see what Renfield would do with an unlocked cell, and where he might go. At least, in that copy it's page 117. Naturally, I have another copy, so I went to check on that edition.

So two for the price of one. In that Signet Classics edition, from 2007, it's from a letter from Seward to Arthur about how Lucy was doing. "As I tell you, he would not say a word more, even when we were alone." Seward was talking about Van Helsing being cryptic, as was standard protocol for him.

My reading of that based on those two quotes is that 2017 will be cryptic and refuse to do what it's meant to do. Heh.

Note: Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, I'll gather all the prompts for the Fifteen Characters Meme, and post the results.

Two older memes are making the rounds again, so here you go. First up, it’s the Fifteen Characters Meme. It seems to be becoming a yearly thing.

And the Time Stamp Meme is going around again, too:

Give me one of my own stories, and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll try to write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

For those interested [personal profile] st_aurafina is hosting Let’s Stick Together: A Friending Meme For 2017.

I created a second part of this year’s Yuletide story, but it’s just for storing a few deleted scenes that people may be interested in for curiosity’s sake. They are scenes that would have gone in, but couldn’t for various reasons. I wanted to keep them somewhere safe other than a comments thread. [personal profile] thisbluespirit gave me the go ahead after I asked if it was okay.

So if someone actually notices the word count jump upwards from the already ridiculous number of 58,042 words to 59,747 words, therein lies the cause. Through this change, all the end notes have automatically been bumped ahead to the end of that second chapter, and will be found there.

Also, because I was asked by a couple of people, I thought I might answer here, too. No. You don’t really need to have watched Dracula (1968) prior to reading the story, but it might help to understand a few alterations in regards to characters—-particularly why Jonathan Harker (played by Corin Redgrave in the film, who is having the time of his life) is the way he is. There are a few smaller differences in the story (as in the characterization of Van Helsing and Dracula) that aren’t nearly as big as his change.

The fanfic is sort of branching off at a critical moment for the characters, but enough information is given in my story that you could probably understand without having seen that part, in regards to plot.

So for the curious who haven’t already watched, here’s Dracula (1968) in its entirety on Youtube. Denholm Elliott is Dracula. It’s only an hour and twenty minutes long. I recommend giving it a watch even if you don’t want to read the story.

A couple of older memes are making the rounds again. So because we all need a break from the week, I'm posting them. First:

1) Make a list of 10-15 characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.

2) Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. 3) After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

The other one is the time stamp meme:
