It's Alive!

I don’t know how, but Comcast has apparently managed to transfer almost everyone to another server for broadband. Earlier this morning, WKYQ said they had been told it would take 2-3 weeks before things were back to normal. Before anyone even started getting service back.

I went over to the other house around 8:30 AM, and stayed until 11:30 AM. Collected all the links I could for a certain period of time on my LJ friends list. (And managed to post a log I needed to at [community profile] x_logs--that took 7 minutes after hitting post) With dial-up, it took a little while. At that point, I e-mailed that list to myself so that when everything was back I could actually read what I missed. Meanwhile, Dad ran out to Sam’s Club for a modem to do dial-up here at home, along with some food.

Because when we tried to set something up with our computer here, we only have it set for broadband, with a modem needed for dial-up not being there for some unknown reason. Also, using Dad’s laptop is pretty much a bizarre exercise. His mouse rarely works. The keyboard is entirely flat, and occasionally types out letters you never touched. And since there’s not a good spot for it, I was attempting to use it, while it was precariously balanced on my dirty clothes hamper. Leading to an awkward, and painful position. (Mom called it the Geico Caveman Position) It was also even slower than the computer at the other house.

But back to what happened after I did all the e-mailing of stuff I needed. We got home, Dad started eating, glanced at his laptop—and basically nearly choked to death on a mouthful of rice. He set it to check the price of gold every few seconds, so he would know if broadband came back. It was working. He was in shock.

And, yes, I really did scream “IT’S ALIVE!” After everyone kept asking “Are you sure? Are you seeing things?”

So if things go well, Sean, I should be on AIM tomorrow morning.

Sidenote: I'm insanely happy right now--I can actually see icons again. And Youtube videos on my friends list. And basically any images my friends list has posted!

ETA: When the internet was down, I started listening to the Big Finish Audios that I already had. The Chimes of Midnight I made it through--there were a few bizarre times where it seemed to go into static, but it eventually came back. From the bits I managed to listen to, I think I liked it.
