Good News: Two of the trees are now gone, but the workers had to stop for nightfall. They said they’ll be back and finish up today. Yesterday, the ones they got were the one nearest to my room (I had to leave my room right before the tree went down, because the thud was going to be huge) and the huge one in the backyard.

Strange News: Apparently, this ice devastation has happened to Paducah before, according to The Paducah Sun. On January 26, 1902--107 years to the day--we had weather exactly like what happened. Like now, power lines and phone lines were toppled and broken, and just like now, it took a long time to restore power everywhere. And, like now, trees collapsed all across the city. Just like this one, it came in two waves.

Equally Strange News: Well, we fixed the problem with the e-mail. Windows Update didn’t cause it, it was apparently McAfee. Dad uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it, and suddenly all the problems in Outlook Express have corrected themselves. We don’t understand it, but we’re grateful.

By the time we got back from church, the tree-cutters were done. They were just waiting around for payment. Neighbors kept an eye on them while we were gone, to make sure nothing went wrong.

The noise may have scarred my cat for life. We let her stay inside the house when we go to church, so she was all alone for the extent of the loud noises. It also turns out that when they were working, they knocked down a cable from the side of the house--they got it back up, eventually. They also broke a little bit of the driveway of a neighbor's house. Dad wasn't going to pay until they got things settled to her liking, which didn't really take that long.

Oh, and the damage to the church? I found out more about it. When the tree hit, it apparently didn't go into the nursery as originally thought--just partially into it. As a result, the drains on the side of the building got clogged, and all the water backed up. It then poured the melting ice and snow into the nursery and the College and Careers classroom.

In total, when they finished pouring all the buckets out, it was a grand total of 100 gallons that had been in those rooms. They're completely waterlogged in those areas, and the little kids have been moved to a different room when they're around.
