The Sci-Fi Channel Gets A New Name

Posting in between people burning limbs (still cleaning up post-ice storm)--the wind finally took a turn where it isn’t blowing over here. They're apparently doing it so the people that keep coming around to get rid of branches and assorted debris won't have as much to do.

The Sci-Fi Channel is changing their name. They will call themselves…The Syfy Channel. Honestly? They haven’t been that great for a few years now, what with the wrestling. And, apparently, a video game competition that they air once a week… Years ago, they had marathons of actual science fiction and it was good. I loved when they had Dark Shadows marathons. And without them showing old horror movies, I never would have seen The World of Dracula…which I’m still hopelessly trying to find again. There’s also a great discussion about the Sci-Fi Channel’s past and how bad it is now over here in settiai’s journal.

10 Annoying Habits of a Geeky Spouse. Personally, I don’t find any of this annoying.

In other news, I’ve gone back through old entries in this journal, to find any memes that could give me another idea for a fanfic, so that I can then join the Finish-A-Thon. As of when I quit for the evening yesterday, I had made it back to December of 2007. I managed to dig up a meme (and also saw that March 29th is Love Your Beta Day, if anyone wants to continue that) that I’ll spread again:

If you had me under your command and could make me write anything , regardless of whether or not I know the fandom or if anybody even writes fic in that fandom for Doctor Who/Torchwood, no matter how crack-addled it might be, what would you love to see me write?

ETA: Found another link about the Sci-Fi Channel’s name change, for those that are interested. They want to move away from science fiction and geeks, according to what the article says. They also say that geeks are people that live in their parents' basements in the interview...

Writer's Block: The Kids' Section

My favorite movies as a kid? The only ones I can think of that could fit were probably The Little Mermaid, Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and Mr. Boogedy. I think we actually kept a tally of how many times I watched The Little Mermaid--we ran out of room after it hit 150 times. Then, the tape broke. And yet, I couldn't quote anything from it, because I preferred the version with the original ending. I also remember fast forwarding through all the songs--I did that with all Disney movies--because I didn't like musical numbers.

I've discussed Mr. Boogedy (and Bride of Boogedy) and Ghostbusters before. Ghostbusters is still my favorite. Reading through the other Writer's Block comments, I would have to add The Last Unicorn, Unico (both movies) and the Bela Lugosi version of Dracula to the list. Having finally watched The Last Unicorn again a few months back, it's still good--and the novel is on the to-be-read pile.

I could keep listing things, but it's easier to just point out the nostalgia tag.

Okay, thanks to that prompt brewsternorth gave me, I had three prompts (I'll still accept them in the previous post, though) and was able to sign up for the Finish-A-Thon. I’ll let everyone know when voting starts, so you can vote for what story I should write. According to the rules, that’s around the 21st, and the voting ends a week later. When the polls are posted on multific, I’ll let everyone know.

Merlin is coming to NBC, and should start airing in June. I read about it just as I finished downloading the entire series.

I'm also downloading all of Being Human, since someone recommended it.

Christopher Eccleston As Destro, And More...

Somehow I missed this Io9 entry when it was first posted. A vampire skull—with a brick in its mouth—was found in Venice. The comments are the best part.

We finally get a glimpse of what Christopher Eccleston will look like as Destro—wearing the silver mask, anyway. It doesn’t look that great to me. And part of me is hoping he'll go back to Heroes at some point--they can always say Claude was just hanging around and watching the mayhem, and quietly mocking everyone.

And waiting for a good shot at whacking Peter over the head with a stick again.

Also, I just realized that I wanted to add a Doctor/Donna (friends or anything else) fanfic prompt to the list of stories I could possibly write for the Finish-A-Thon. You can edit prompts if you’ve already posted the list from what I’ve read in the FAQ. Currently, I can’t think of a scenario. Any ideas?
