Rest In Peace, Ivan Reitman

Ivan Reitman passed away in his sleep Saturday night, at the age of 75. May he rest in peace.

He will be best known to me as the director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II. I remember reading how proud he was to see the three surviving leads from the first two movies appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Part of that interview is even in the obit at The Hollywood Reporter.

Rest In Peace, Max Von Sydow

Max Von Sydow has passed away at the age of 90. May he rest in peace. I will always remember him best as the fantastically evil voice of Vigo in Ghostbusters 2 (1989). I never had any interest in watching The Exorcist (1973), where he played Father Merrin. However, I did watch the second film, Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) when it was on Encore at one point years back, bad as that one was.

I will also remember him as Ming The Mercliess in Flash Gordon (1980); Comet TV aired that again just the other day.

I don’t have any icons of Vigo, so have one of Janine hugging Egon.

Rest In Peace, June Foray

June Foray has passed away at the age of 99, just two months before what would have been her 100th birthday. May she rest in peace. She is likely best known as the voice of Rocky The Flying Squirrel and Natasha on The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show. I think Nickelodeon played that quite a bit back in the 80’s.

After I looked through her IMDB filmography, I saw that she basically did voice work on a lot of the shows of my childhood. She was the voice of various characters in Denver The Last Dinosaur, The Smurfs, The Incredible Hulk (the 1982 cartoon, narrated by Stan Lee), and The Real Ghostbusters. She was the voice of Aunt May in Spider-Man And His Amazing Friends. Mrs. Featherby in both the Ducktales series, as well as Ducktales The Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp (1990).

She was the voice of the Talky Tina doll in an episode of The Twilight Zone.

She was in Rikki-Tikki-Tavi (1975) as the voices of Nagaina the Cobra, Wife of Nag; Teddy's Mother; and Darzee's Wife. I think that, and The Cricket In Times Square (1973) were on Nickelodeon a lot, too. She was the voice of the Hag in Faeries (1981), which I watched when I was likely only a year old--2 at the most...however old I was, a moment where a shadow is stabbed and starts bleeding left an impression, for I searched for it for decades before finding the title.

Rest In Peace, Hank Deutschendorf

Hank Deutschendorf passed away on June 14th, at the age of 28, after losing his battle with schizoaffective disorder. May he rest in peace. Condolences go out to his twin brother Will (and the rest of his family); together, the twins played little Oscar in Ghostbusters II.

I was on the way to Nashville when this would have been posted, on June 21st. I only found this out because I happened to suddenly have a desire to read through the TV Tropes page for Ghostbusters II earlier this morning. I spotted a link to the first article on his death that I linked to, which was situated on the YMMV page for the film.

Rest In Peace, Bernie Wrightson

Bernie Wrightson has passed away at the age of 68, following a battle with brain cancer. May he rest in peace. His work looked familiar to me; I eventually realized that he did the illustration/concept design for the original Ghostbusters (1984). It was featured in the book Making Ghostbusters.

And if anyone out there desires to get a look at Making Ghostbusters, and can’t locate a physical copy, (it tends to be rare, or ridiculously expensive) you can download a pdf copy over at Spook Central. It’s the third book featured on the page—right click and download the full book pdf.

After a quick perusal of his Wikipedia page, I see that I’ve also seen his work in Batman: The Cult, Batman/Aliens, and Heroes For Hope: Starring The X-Men #1 (he worked on three pages). I never knew about his comic book adaptation of Frankenstein until now.

Rest In Peace To: Bowie, Libertini, Margulies, And Rickman

This is such a rotten week for celebrities. David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Richard Libertini, Angus Scrimm, and David Margulies all died. I thought I posted about David Bowie, but apparently I didn’t (just Angus Scrimm). So in alphabetical order at this point:

David Bowie passed away on January 10th, age the age of 69, following an 18 month battle with liver cancer. May he rest in peace. I had never even heard of him until around 2006 due to having no interest in music. I heard of him for the first time as a result of seeing him in The Prestige as Nikola Tesla. I loved the certain scenes in the first and last episodes of Life On Mars (British version, not the American remake) that made a lovely use of his music at pivotal moments. I have no nostalgic feelings for Labyrinth, but I did find it enjoyably weird and fun when I saw it for the first time (and Encore played it a lot) about 3 years ago. I avoided it until then, due to a general dislike of muppets and a loathing for musicals. I’ll probably rewatch it soon. I liked his role in The Hunger (1983). I need to watch The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976), as I have never seen that.

Shock Till You Drop has An Appreciation of David Bowie’s Performance In 1983’s The Hunger. Birth Movies Death has Labyrinth: Long Live The Goblin King.

As a sidenote: the weird upside down staircase in Labyrinth almost made it into my Crimson Peak Yuletide story as an homage, as another way of Lucille screwing with Edith’s mind. (Which would have been right after a deleted scene with a tombstone and gargoyle in a room) I scrapped it before anything was written of it, because seriously—it was long enough by that point. I almost wish I had done it now.

Richard Libertini has passed away, at the age of 82, after a two year battle with cancer. I knew him from House of Frankenstein (1997). I may have been one of the few that liked that film.

David Margulies has passed away at the age of 78, after a long illness. He will be best known to Ghostbusters fans as Mayor Lenny.

Alan Rickman has passed away at the age of 69, after a battle with cancer. May he rest in peace. I loved him whenever I spotted him in a film. Or, in the case of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (2005), heard his voice. I loved him as the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, even if I didn’t care for the rest of the film. I always meant to watch Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)—maybe now I will. I have never seen Die Hard or the Harry Potter films, because I’m not interested in action movies or Harry Potter.

Nobody Steps On A Church In My Town

I returned from the 11:30 AM* showing of Ghostbusters a little while ago. Did anyone else on my friends list go to the airing of Ghostbusters--and if so, did you notice that a couple scenes toward the start, which felt ever so slightly extended? For instance, there seemed a few more lines sprinkled in there when Peter's talking to the blonde girl after that psychic experiment.

Highlights from my showing? There weren't too many speak of. I was the only person there at all, in the room Ghostbusters was shown in.

The air was terrible, sort of a mix of stuffy, and severely humid. But it still felt as though the air conditioning was running, just not right. It was like someone had opened the exit door and left it open for a few days, in that one particular theater room and the air coniditoning was just moving it around. It was starting to get oppressive--then, someone popped their head in the door, glanced around, shot a text message to someone, to presumably confirm there was one solitary soul in attendance, and left--and then the air conditioning worked harder for five minutes, it started to get better...before going dead.

So around when Mr. Stay Puft was stomping on a church in Peter's town, before the heat actually got any worse, I went on my way. We've been getting a heat index of around 107 for over a week, and I'd rather not sit in a theater and overheat.

Aside from those issues, the showing looked very crisp and clear. I finally spotted Ron Jeremy's cameo. However, for the first time I noticed a character on a stretcher outside Dana's building, as the Ghostbusters pull up. From a distance, it appeared as though it could have been the elderly woman that spotted the Terror Dog chasing Louis, who ran back inside. I could be wrong.

*The movie started 27 minutes later than expected, due to all the trailers.

Ghostbusters Is Imminent

I didn’t think that Ghostbusters was going to be re-released anywhere around here for their 30th anniversary. However, as of this morning, I see that the local Cinemark will play it after all. Nice thing to learn on one’s birthday.

So August 29th, provided there are no severe thunderstorms, illnesses, or anyone requiring the use of the car for a doctor’s visit (my sister goes the day before, provided nothing changes) then once I get tickets, I should be going to the 11:30 AM showing. They have it five times that day, so if something happens I’ll be heading for the 2 PM showing.

Rest In Peace, Harold Ramis

Harold Ramis has passed away, at the age of 69, as a result of “complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis,” which he had been battling since 2010. May he rest in peace. He will best be remembered by his fans as Egon Spengler from Ghostbusters, as well as being the co-writer of both that, as well as Groundhog Day, in addition to many other great films which I now realize I haven't had the good fortune to see.

He will be greatly missed. And with that news, I’m off to rewatch the first Ghostbusters movie, in his memory. Egon was always my favorite of the team.
