As a lot of others are doing, given the whole situation with the Livejournal password breach, I am systematically going through and revoking access to journals that either were never posted in, or a person was last seen so many years ago that they probably aren’t ever coming back. If I have accidentally removed your access, or you’re usually a lurker and think I might mistakenly do so, just let me know and I’ll either fix things, or make certain I don't remove you.

I’ve needed to do this for a few years, really. Some haven’t been seen in a decade by the look of it; so many from long ago when I still wrote Doctor Who fanfic.
calliopes_pen: (sallymn home sweet gothic home)
So apparently, Dreamwidth has been around for ten years. There is an equivalent stats meme that has been going around my reading list. Meanwhile, Livejournal has been around for twenty years this year based on another meme making the rounds. Since I’ve pretty much utterly abandoned my LJ and haven't cross-posted to it since 2017, I won’t be doing that one.

So happy anniversary, Dreamwidth! My anniversary here isn’t until next month.

It seems that some journals are being considered spammers for linking to any sites outside of Livejournal, and being deleted.. So if this is all true, and will become a regular thing when someone links outside of the site, then I may consider putting a halt to cross-posting to Livejournal altogether. I’ll be keeping an eye on the comments over in that entry, so that I might see what develops. Currently, it's a wait and see/learn more situation.

Given that I link to things outside of Livejournal, it’s quite likely that I would be suspended for mistakenly being a spammer if an errant spambot script got hold of my journal; each cross-post is technically a link to outside of Livejournal, even if you don’t factor in linking to fanfic posted to Ao3 or wherever else I collect links from.

Kudos to [personal profile] meridian_rose for mentioning this, as it was the first I had heard of it.

I periodically import any comments from the Livejournal side (and now that the influx of new people importing has slowed a bit, it only takes about 5-20 minutes to complete an import as of this writing) so that nothing will be lost if my Livejournal happens to fall under some vague thing that all ends with a deletion, temporary or otherwise.

To those who prefer commenting on the LJ side: Should anything happen to my journal, you can easily find me and add me on Dreamwidth if you have an account there and haven’t already. Same username, even if you don’t have access to a cross-post link.

I came up with a few potential usernames for the Gothic Horror/Romance group in addition to a couple that were suggested, so you get a poll.

The winner of the poll is Gothic Horror/Romance, with 9 votes. In a very close second place with 7 votes, people were in favor of me creating a community for both that, and Dracula.

I'll get started on creating a community in the next few days, once I've thought up a suitable username for it. gothic_lit feels a bit too confining for it, as it isn't just literature.

So it would be a bit less than 2 weeks before my own Dreamwidth anniversary. I didn’t miss it, since I apparently created my account almost a month after almost everyone else I’ve seen doing this meme.

All comments have imported successfully for [community profile] librarian_films and [community profile] relation_ships as of half an hour ago. I discovered and cleaned up one case of Russian spam in the form of a truly massive wall of text in a comment of the latter from about a year ago, which went unnoticed (but screened, even following the import) until now.

As planned, both communities were deleted from the Livejournal side once I made certain that everything was in order. Following input in favor of not going that route, I plan to leave [community profile] big_damn_quests in both places. It's safely backed up here on Dreamwidth, should anything worse remove it over there.
calliopes_pen: (iconsbycurtana Egyptology Evie)
Before you delete your Livejournal account, if you plan to do so? Or even just if you’re planning to stay, and don’t plan to delete it, you may desire to claim your Open ID account anyway. It’s one of the many links in the Dreamwidth Starter Kit that [personal profile] bisharp made, but I thought I’d do a separate post on the topic, just in case anyone missed it.

As an example, back when I did it, I simply typed in calliopes-pen.livejournal.com and calliopes-pen.insanejournal.com.

Once you’ve done that, older comments that you made that were imported from both Livejournal and Insanejournal immediately become linked to your Dreamwidth account. So calliopes-pen.insanejournal.com becomes calliopes_pen in whatever journal, and goes straight here when clicked on. A user icon will then appear beside it, just as it once did wherever the comment originated.

(Expect it to take a while longer to import your journals, too, if you haven’t seen that update already. It’s still going quite admirably as it tries to bring over [community profile] big_damn_quests. As of this moment, it’s 1614 others waiting in the queue, after a day. I’m amused, more than anything. I’m just glad the site hasn’t broken from the strain.)
calliopes_pen: (iconsbycurtana librarians rule the world)
I have successfully transferred all images in the Livejournal Scrapbook over to Dreamwidth for the ice storm post from 2009, and switched out all the accompanying links there, and for the Livejournal side, before deleting the images in the Scrapbook.

I noticed that it had a duplicate entry. My first thought was that it was caused back when I first imported everything years ago, but no. It's that way on the Livejournal side as well, so it's an old Livejournal hiccup that occurred at some point. As there were no comments to that Livejournal hiccup, I deleted it on both sides to prevent further issues.

Edit: Oh, and for those interested: [personal profile] bisharp has made a Dreamwidth Starter Kit, for those that are making the move from Livejournal to Dreamwidth, and need tutorials, customizations, groups for obtaining assistance, and an assortment of other things.

*People have discovered that if you disable Javascript, you disable the message that appears and won’t go away until you agree to the new TOS. You can do this by using Ghostery or uBlock Origin or Noscript. At which point, while you can’t make a new post or comment or cross-post without agreeing, you can still delete your journal over there if that’s what you personally feel is right for you. Found via [personal profile] justhuman: [personal profile] rosefox shows the steps for getting it to go away with uBlock Origin.

*The full English translation of the Russian version of the new TOS.

*If you make the transition and change your username, there’s always this post at [community profile] 2017revival: Want to find an old LJ friend? Linking DW and LJ identities. [community profile] lj_refugees is another place to go if you just joined, as is [community profile] getting_started.

*How to move to Dreamwidth and like it.

*From [personal profile] rahirah: How to redirect comments on a crosspost.

*I was trying to determine if I should import anything I was maintainer of long ago. [livejournal.com profile] big_damn_quests is seriously long since dead. Would anyone be averse to me importing it on over to Dreamwidth, just for archival purposes? It’s been dead for 10 years as of this year, and I’ve moved away from the Firefly fandom.

*I just completed saving all the inactive icons in the [livejournal.com profile] x_meggan journal. Over 70 of those.

*Tomorrow I’ll get started on slowly adding what was in Livejournal’s scrapbook to Dreamwidth’s service, and then slowly go through and try to correct broken links as I delete them from the Livejournal side.

*Long ago, I roleplayed Willow from Buffy, under the name [livejournal.com profile] strega_willow. I’ve just saved all the inactive icons there, and I’m thinking of importing it over to Dreamwidth, too. That will only happen if I decide any of it’s worth keeping after I go through and read it. If it isn't, then I'll delete that journal.

*If I haven’t added someone on the Dreamwidth side yet, please let me know in the comments and I will do it.

Edit: As of 1:40 PM, I finished going through the entirety of Scrapbook, and deleted anything I would never need again. It was time for cleaning out the assorted junk that had accumulated anyway. As stated earlier, whatever is left will be hosted on Dreamwidth soon.
calliopes_pen: (sallymn Brigadier raining)
Around 2 PM yesterday, we had a weird meteorological effect. It looked like there were three suns. One real, two (obviously) not, but still very bright. Across the two fake ones were two separate miniature rainbows. The local news said it was called a Sundog, caused by ice crystals. It lasted about an hour. Here’s a better example that I found, following a quick Google search. (Upon hearing this via phone, Dad asked if the freezing cold had done things to us. No. Not quite.)

For anyone thinking of migrating to Dreamwidth, (or just having a back-up journal just in case they wish to be ready for the next outage) due to the issues that have been plaguing Livejournal lately, I’m calliopes_pen over there. Also, if you only want me to follow you on Dreamwidth and not LJ anymore, just let me know.

There's talk of my sister being sent home by the hospital, despite her not being any better. Eight hours after she gets some more blood, which was supposed to be this morning. They're still waiting on that (or were, as of 1:45 PM). We'll see what happens there, since the flesh eating stuff spread a bit further (and peripheral edema wasn't down at all) last I heard, despite the gauze wrapped around her head to halt the stuff oozing. They just want her to go to a wound care place, and walk a bit (which she can't do).

ETA: Correction: They started giving her blood around 2:05 PM, so they'll probably let her out around 10 PM.

I’m working on changing my Dreamwidth layout to something similar in coloring to what I have over on LJ. After digging through various styles, Elegant Brown seems to be the coloring that’s closest. I’ve narrowed it down to two that could work. So here's a poll-—vote for the one that you believe works best.

Dreamwidth is allowing account creation without an invite code for the rest of the year. If anyone wants to find me over there, my username is the same there as it is here. I just don’t cross-post all that often, save when LJ’s down. When it comes to LJ’s alterations, the larger font style will take some getting used to. I rarely used subject lines in comments, outside of Yuletide, certain memes, and the occasional auction. I can see the icon selection bit being a problem for those on dial-up. The part where you can make everything go to unthreaded at the same time is good. I like the bit where it tells what comments are new since you last visited.

ETA: The tags being moved to the bottom of the page will also take some getting used to.

The part where you can make everything go to unthreaded at the same time is good. I like the bit where it tells what comments are new since you last visited.

Anyone know if there’s a way to alter the coding of my journal layout however it needs to be done, so that I can then use it in S2 and stick it on my Dreamwidth journal? All I’ve ever used is S1--the layout involves Generator, so I’ll need some way around that. I don't believe [livejournal.com profile] amavel_bel made a version of it for S2 when she made this one a few years back.

I still have 8 7 Dreamwidth invites left, if anyone would like one.
