Anton Yelchin died yesterday in a freak accident involving his car. He was found by friends “pinned between his car and a brick mailbox pillar” after it seemingly rolled down a hill while in neutral. Police do not suspect foul play. He was 27 years old. May he rest in peace. He did a great job with the character of Charlie in Fright Night (2011). For Star Trek fans, he was Chekov in the Star Trek reboot.

I might give Only Lovers Left Alive (2013) one last shot, as I never made it all the way through. I will also track down Odd Thomas and Burying The Ex.

Hollywood Remembers Anton Yelchin.

This truly is a rotten year for famous people. It’s at the point where I expect someone famous to have died whenever I’m about to read my friends list. I just didn’t expect that one.

Title: Give Your Soul To The Night
Author: calliopes_pen
Written For: [livejournal.com profile] beren_writes, for Yuletide.
Rating: PG-13
Fandom: Fright Night (1985)
Characters: Charley Brewster, Billy Cole, Jerry Dandrige, Amy Peterson, Ed Thompson, Peter Vincent.
Word Count: 21,632
Author’s Notes: The prompt was this: “I'd love to see a story where Charlie doesn't save the day and ends up a vampire with Jerry. I'd prefer it if he was happy with the situation, either because they come to an understanding, or he goes completely vampire evil and enjoys it.” The title comes from a lyric in Come To Me, when it’s sung by Deborah Holland for Fright Night Part 2 (1988).
Beta Readers: A huge thanks to both [livejournal.com profile] persiflage_1 and [livejournal.com profile] seandc for beta reading
Summary: Charley and Peter don’t save the day, and Jerry offers Charley a choice. Charley takes him up on the offer to become a vampire, despite Peter’s warnings. While the change is painful, the bite is exquisite, and Charley comes to enjoy...well, everything, really.

You can see your friends again, Charley. You would have them back,” he whispered seductively into his ear. “Without fear. You would be safe. You wouldn’t need to fear the unknown, once it’s claimed you. )

This would be the fanfic I wrote for Yuletide. I’ll post something about the process of writing this long story either later today or tomorrow. Given the length of this fanfic, it’s probably too long to actually post the whole thing to Dreamwidth.

Anyone know of any (LJ or Dreamwidth) Fright Night groups that aren't long dead?

Richard Briers has passed away at the age of 79, following a long struggle with a lung condition. May he rest in peace. For Doctor Who fans, he appeared in the Seventh Doctor story Paradise Towers, playing the Chief Caretaker. He also played the role of Henry Parker, in the Torchwood episode A Day In The Death. I also remember that he played Smee in the 2003 version (which I think I saw on Encore once) of Peter Pan, and had a role in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).

Fandom Brainstorming For Yuletide 2012. Nominations begin later this month. I’ve been planning my nominations for a few months now. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: 1996 will be in one of the three slots, since I’ve already come up with a prompt. If someone else nominates Ghostbusters and Dark Shadows (90’s version) then I won’t need to, and I can go for the original Fright Night. For the final nomination, it depends on which one of these people want to see end up on the list more: The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, Mr. Boogedy, The Librarian series of movies, Fred Saberhagen’s Dracula novels, Innocent Blood (1992), or The Mercury Men.

Livejournal has transferred over everyone to the new Scrapbook. I was unable to find any page numbers as I checked through—you can really only see them in Firefox, I’ve found, while everything else is fine in IE. Everyone should check and make sure their pictures haven’t been rearranged, as I’ve found some icons I had saved were moved into a different gallery. I’m putting them back in the correct location as I find them.

Gary Oldman on The Dark Knight Rises, and what he’ll miss about playing Commissioner Gordon.

There will be a new Killer Klowns From Outer Space movie in 2012—it will be a strange hybrid of remake and sequel.

In other news, I located a great copy of Fright Night Part 2, where I can actually see everything clearly. Unlike every other copy, it’s not pitch black and murky. It’s a rip from a fantastic HD airing on a now defunct channel, from what I can determine. I’ve also located a copy of DVD Delirium Volume 1: Redux, so that should be here by about mid-January. So I can mark those two off my list to track down.

Something that wasn’t on my list, but was nice to stumble across--finally locating a copy of The Giant of Thunder Mountain. Having now watched it for the first time since 1990, I can’t see why I would have liked it even vaguely back then, since I loathed uplifting movies. Dreadfully dull, but at least I've watched it as an adult.

Yesterday, I watched the Fright Night remake for the first time. It would have been nicer if the conversion to 3D thing didn’t mean whole chunks of the movie were black. It’s that, or the people in charge of lighting should have been fired. However, I was greatly impressed by the way they got around inviting someone into a home, and what Charley did in the final battle, and liked certain bits with Peter Vincent.

I put that I was willing to write: My Best Friend Is A Vampire, Fright Night, Ghostbusters, The Last Unicorn, and Back to the Future. Once Dad was finished reformatting his laptop, (he just needs a new one, but won’t listen—it’s 6 ½ years old, and keeps crawling pitifully on) I decided to test the four websites that I can’t access on this computer. Just like on here, those four—That Guy With The Glasses, Demonoid, Clique Clack, and Insanejournal—refuse to open. Ping requests cannot find them, and nothing turns up. Back on mine, I tried to surf to Insanejournal via the IP address, which didn’t work in IE, almost in Chrome, and only got the main page in Firefox. With Firefox, just like the one on this computer, I could log in, but not do anything else. I can’t get to my journal, or any other page outside of the homepage.

With Demonoid, using the IP address, I can get to the page, log in, and perform a search. I can’t get anything for CliqueClack or That Guy With The Glasses, and I can’t get to my journal at IJ. Ideas? What do these four sites have in common? This all started on Tuesday.

Edit: Oh, right. The other day I went ahead and posted my wish list to [community profile] wish_list. Might as well just link to it now, so I don’t lose track of it.

I watched my first Wes Craven and Stephen King movies yesterday. Salem’s Lot (the original) and The People Under The Stairs. Not scary at all. When it comes to the former, never in my life have I wanted to see an entire town slaughtered by the vampires so badly. With the latter, that one was strange, but I liked it.

The trailer for The Woman In Black. Not a fan of Daniel Radcliffe, but it looks nice and creepy. Is the original worth tracking down?

Two clips from Let’s Kill Hitler.

Listen to Roddy McDowell as Peter Vincent and Chris Sarandon as Jerry from Fright Night, singing a duet of Amy, Awake.

Today’s Dimestore Dames focuses on Kitty Pryde. It was actually Kitty that got me interested in comics—I believe my first issue of Uncanny X-Men was the one where she found Lockheed on the Brood homeworld. I was 2, meaning I’ve been both a Kitty Pryde fan as well as an X-Men fan for 28 years.

A fan tells how he is creating the Indiana Jones World Map.

For Rifftrax Live, at the theater I went to we had a grand total of 6 people—and that’s counting me, and counting Dad. Having a brain fried from attempting to tackle a strange computer issue for over 7 hours (involved a Windows Update gone wrong, and something with Spyware Doctor, seems to be fixed as of yesterday evening--periodic breaks for logging saved my sanity) is not particularly conducive to enjoying either the experience or a birthday as a whole, but it was quite nice. Satellite News has a place for detailing your experiences here.
