Richard Briers has passed away at the age of 79, following a long struggle with a lung condition. May he rest in peace. For Doctor Who fans, he appeared in the Seventh Doctor story Paradise Towers, playing the Chief Caretaker. He also played the role of Henry Parker, in the Torchwood episode A Day In The Death. I also remember that he played Smee in the 2003 version (which I think I saw on Encore once) of Peter Pan, and had a role in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).

The Hobbit Cast Assembles.

Io9 dissects each image from the X-Men: First Class trailer.

Michael Rosenbaum is returning to Smallville for the series finale. Dad's the only one in this house still watching the show, but I might check out the finale. He wanted to update me on every single detail since I quit watching, but no. I don't want to know.

Io9 has a snippet of the original audition tape (included on the most recent DVD for the U.S.) for Paul McGann for the Doctor Who movie. Back when they were planning to go with the Master and Doctor as secret brothers.

And now, a meme, from [livejournal.com profile] wanderlustlover:

Comment here and I'll pick 5 of your icons for you to write about.

A developing story is that Wizard Magazine may be dead. Calls go unanswered, the subscription page of their site returns a 404, their “bullpen website” is down, and numerous other suspicious things are going on. Toyfare may continue being published for now, but I wouldn't count on that lasting too long given the evidence. I had just renewed my subscription to Wizard for another year and they’ve cashed that check, so they owe me--and many other people.

ETA: Good, just checked and I hadn't renewed my subscription to Toyfare yet. Now I won't be doing that.

ETA 2: An update on the developing story. They now say that Toyfare will also be ceasing publication immediately.

Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes? I had a problem with one rather large snake on the front porch (Dad decapitated it with a shovel) which just refused to slither off when I was little, but thousands inside the house? I would have lost it. According to someone in both the Gawker and Jezebel comments, that house was featured on an episode of Animal Planet’s series Infested. If you want to see news footage of the house, head for the Gawker link.

Booster Gold has been cast on Smallville. He will be played by Eric Martsolf, who I know as Brady from Days of Our Lives. And, formerly, Ethan from Passions. He doesn’t really seem right for the role, but he can act.

And now, just spreading a meme from a few on my IJ friends list:

1. Name one of my RP characters and one of yours (or one of someone else's if your really want).
2. Name a destination, anywhere in the known or created universes.
3. I'll write you my character's postcard to the other, from that destination.

There’s two more days for bidding in the auction to help Australia at [livejournal.com profile] qldfloodauction, and my thread is here. Bidding was at $10 as of the last I checked.

Matthew Vaughn cut 12 pages of X-Men: First Class after seeing Inception. Apparently, that movie was too similar to a scene set on the astral plane.

In other news, before the heat index, the temperature is currently 105 degrees. I'll find out how bad the heat index is this evening, but I suspect it's 115 degrees. And it feels like it. My kingdom for an unlimited supply of iced tea.

ETA: And I was close. According to the local news, as of 5 PM the heat index was 117 degrees.

Here’s the footage of Blue Beetle transforming that debuted at Comic-Con. It looks more like something that should be on Power Rangers or Big Bad Beetleborgs. I think I read somewhere that it’s for a transformation sequence in Smallville. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle will be in the final season, but it will be Jaime, not Ted.

Io9 lists The Best Cosplay of Comic-Con. Some of those costumes are great. My favorites are the guy dressed as Lobo in #21, Bender in #33—same one who was in the protests, Cloak and Dagger in #38, (well, mostly Cloak with a mannequin of Dagger attached at the hip) and Mystique in #47.

Topless Robot lists 11 Bad Draculas. The list includes Morgan Freeman in The Electric Company, along with the version of Dracula that appeared on Buffy. I liked Love at First Bite and Dracula Dead And Loving It, and they’re on the list.

Found via [profile] blognewsarama: Fake Stan Lee visits Comic Con back in 2009. It’s funny.

To help bring attention to the fact the budget for The New York Public Library has been dramatically slashed, Improv Everywhere staged a skit where people dressed as ghosts (wearing sheets) and wandered through the building. Then, four people dressed as the Ghostbusters show up. You can watch it here. Some behind the scenes stuff is here. Yes, Winston wasn’t there when the Ghostbusters investigated it in the movie, but I’m okay with that. Personally, I think they needed a Janine to scream “We got one!” Or that a flash mob should do this sort of thing at a museum, bringing along a portrait of Vigo. …someone please do this in my town. We have Zombie Flash Mobs marching down the streets every October, we need the Ghostbusters, too.

Io9 interviews Steven Moffat.

Three new clips of the next episode of Doctor Who have just been released.

Smallville ends after the next seasonseason 10 to be exact. Tom Welling broke the news. I still doubt he’ll ever wear the tights, even at the end of the series.

Sidenote: Dad still watches even if I gave up on it long ago, and says he’s very happy that it’s ending—because now I can force him to watch something else. It’s the only way he ends up watching stuff, apparently. Because of me, he says he’s “watched Buffy, Angel, Veronica Mars, Life on Mars, Torchwood, Doctor Who, Highlander, Merlin and Thundercats.” The last is very random, but apparently he got hooked at some point long, long ago when I wouldn’t let him leave the room when it was on. Probably around the age of 6 or 7.

There are a few promo banner for Torchwood, for the Support Stacie Auction, over here. And I might as well link to my own revised Doctor Who sign up again--you can read it here, in a comment at [profile] dwsupportstacie. I added that I am willing to write something OT3 related—I was surprised that I had forgotten to include that, as I’ve been in the OT3 ficathon a few times now.

From Cracked.com: As Seen On TV: The 10 Most Laughably Misleading Ads.

50 Films That Nearly Had Very Different Casts. Ghostbusters is at the top of the list. Gozer was nearly played by Pee Wee Herman. If Sandra Bernhard had been Janine, I would have avoided this movie like the plague. Christopher Lloyd as Peter? I just can’t see him working in the role, even if I think he’s great.

At Dragon Con, James Marsters received a birthday present from some of his fans—apparently, a Storm Trooper costume. Here’s the [profile] whedonesque post about it, which includes Youtube links showing it. If you don’t want to go to their site, go here and it continues here.

Kristen Kreuk is joining the cast of Chuck.

Sherlock Holmes vs. zombies? It’s due to happen in a comic published by Wildstorm, called Victorian Undead.

Speaking of Sherlock Holmes, [profile] slashfilm says that British tabloids mentioned Brad Pitt would be playing Moriarty in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. It doesn’t seem like it’s true, though.

Apparently, the Wonder Twins might be showing up on Smallville. So...it was possible for Smallville to either get worse or get even stranger. Who knew?

How to tell if your cat is plotting to kill you. It’s funny.

Everyone remembers the DDOS attacks on LJ? LJ is offering everyone with a paid account a three day extension added on to thei account, if it was affected by everything. Read more about it here. For a brief moment, I thought I could do that for the [profile] x_meggan journal, until I remembered that the money orders I sent never did arrive, so it’s not a paid account.

Oh, and for those that are interested? Mom thinks the bug in my drink was a firefly—I Googled to make sure, and it was definitely that. A mutant one, given the length, but a firefly nonetheless.
